Hunting & Trapping are great outdoor activities that combine physical activity, self sustainability practices, and Maine Tradition. Most of the land in Maine is privately owned, but there are multiple land owners that allow people to access their land for hunting purposes! Most of these land owners request that anyone accessing their land obtain written permission before hand, which can be done by contacting the land owner. You can find all of this information at your local town office, or the land owner's website (if applicable).
Also please note that it is required by the state of Maine that ALL hunters hold an up-to-date hunting license. Hunting licenses can be purchased through Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife; either by stopping in at one of their local offices or by visiting their website (linked below).
Our partners at Somerset Woods Trustees are a great example of providing access for most hunting activities! Here is a little more information about hunting on SWT property:
Hunting has traditionally been allowed on most Somerset Woods Trustees (SWT) properties. As local lands are more frequently posted against hunting and public access, SWT properties are experiencing increasing pressure, especially during deer firearms season. All hunters must submit a Hunting Notification Form every year. Hunters are expected to abide by all state and local hunting regulations, avoid heavily used hiking areas, and to be courteous to any non-hunters they may encounter. Hunters are expected to review and respect the SWT Hunting Guidelines. We also ask that all hunters report their harvests to our Stewardship Coordinator as this is useful habitat data. Please visit the Somerset Woods Trustees website for all of their hunting regulations and restrictions.
