In early 1963, a single man, Richard Smith, conceived the idea of an organization whose primary function would be to serve the needs of the singles community of Albuquerque.
A viable membership was established, officers elected, and the Club house opened at 605 Yale SE. The organization was formally chartered by the New Mexico State Corporation Commission on December 16, 1963.
When a private club liquor license was granted in April 1964, the Solo Club became the first singles organization in the State of NM to have its own complete club facilities.
By March 1969, membership was growing and we outgrew our existing facility. The Club raised money, purchased a lot, and a ground-breaking ceremony was held for the new facility at 2500 Candelaria NE.
The 4,800-square-foot facility included a bar, ballroom, recreation room, kitchen, office, restrooms and a walled patio. Two years later additional land was purchased to accommodate parking needs.
In 1983, the mortgage was paid in full and a celebration was held in July where the mortgage papers were burned.
Over the years, the Club was remodeled including everything from moving the location of the front doors, to adding on additional space for member use.
The Club has faced many challenges over the years, but has persevered because of the incredible members who value the benefits they receive from Club membership.
The Club, through its members, has donated to various charities over the years in an effort to give back to the community. Charities include Toys for Tots, Roadrunner Food Bank, and other important community organizations.
