COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Notice that throughout Italy it is still mandatory to wear a FFP2 mask, covering mouth and nose, on all forms of public transport: this includes trains, shuttle services and local buses (but not airplanes). Masks in shops and restaurants are only required if social distancing is not possible. No "Green Pass"/"Covid-Pass" is required anymore to travel or to access shops and other venues.

Please be aware of these regulations and, above all, be mindful of your health and that of others!

How to reach Trieste

By plane

Trieste "Ronchi dei Legionari" airport is about 30 km north-west of SISSA. From there you can take the APT coach service (Line G51) to Trieste train station, tickets are available from the blue machine just beyond the arrivals gate or via the TPL FVG smartphone app. (Note that this service runs somewhat less frequently at weekends; tickets for the return journey must be purchased in advance, downtown from the bus station next to Trieste Centrale train station). There are some train lines connecting "Ronchi dei Legionari" airport with Trieste Centrale (see below). Alternatively, take a taxi (cost is around 45 EUR with a surcharge for luggage).

The Venice Airports (Marco Polo and Treviso) also are viable. From there you'll need to take the coach service (tickets available from the ATVO service desk at the airport foyer) to Venezia Mestre train station; from there, take a train to Trieste Centrale (the duration is one and a half to two hours; be sure you take the train through Portogruaro, NOT through Udine).

Though not far, the airport of Ljubljana (Slovenia) is poorly connected with Trieste, and we do not recommend it unless you plan to rent a car.

By train

The main train station is Trieste Centrale. Some long distance trains coming to Trieste might involve changing trains in Venezia Mestre. In Italy, train tickets should be purchased in advance either online, from an automatic vending machine or from a sales assistant.

How to reach SISSA from downtown
