Èṣù (ay-shu) is the primordial Yoruba philosophy of equilibrium. ESU also symbolises the electrostatic units of recaptured ecoeconomic potential stored in organic carbon atoms.

Its value comes from its self-sustaining ecoeconomic impact, or "killing two birds with one another".
This planet can take care of itself. But there's an excess ~286 GtC (Gigatonnes, or trillion kilograms, or billion tonnes of Carbon) that's been trapped in Earth's atmosphere since 1850, storing heat energy instead of letting it return to outer space.
Today, we're releasing 35x more Carbon into the air yearly than we were 175 years ago. At our current rate (~5 GtC/year), we should be doomed in 25 years. (286 GtC + 5 GtC/year × 25 years ≈ 411 GtC trapped in the air)
But instead of panicking, we will trade those trillions in weight for money and restore the balance. How?
The greatest advantage of using microalgae for carbon capture (Environmental Biotechnology) is their growth rate. Their populations double easily in 24 hours, and half of their dry weight is pure, organic carbon biosynthesised from atmospheric carbon dioxide.Â
These organisms create ~50% of all the primary organic carbon molecules in the food web and on Earth, ~75% of the oxygen in the air, and ~50% of all glucose molecules in the same food web. Entrusting our future to them is our best chance of preserving it.
To achieve our mission to remove 50% of total emissions by 2050 set at 411 GtC, we'll need to reabsorb atmospheric carbon at the yearly rate of (411 GtC / 25 years × 50%) 8.22 GtC/year, and this number is the philosophy of the coin.Â
This project beats any other carbon offsetting project's speed—and also impact & scalability by farming in Africa, where the year-round climate is best for microalgal yield. Microalgae bioreactors can absorb 400x more carbon than trees.
These billions of captured tonnes will be sold to you & the public as organic carbon tokens. How?
Our cryptocurrency's foundation is built on the "maximum realisable market value of all byproducts created from 1 tonne of our organic carbon".
Therefore, creating & selling multiple microalgae byproducts people want gives 1 ESU its value. Â We target & replace current solutions to global day-to-day problems sustainably in multiple industries because microalgae is extremely versatile. (See targeted byproducts)
Their maximum realisable market value is continuously calculated & overseen by the Byproduct Valuation & Oracle Management Node—one of the nodes in the heterarchical structure of governance we use. They calculate the highest amount of value extractable from 1 tonne of our organic carbon, not just how much its byproducts cost.
Because microalgae as a resource is rapidly renewable, the assets themselves are renewable. In addition, we offset atmospheric carbon regardless of token purchases since farming these organisms provides us with the raw materials needed for our various byproducts. You'd just be leaving money on the table.
The best part is, by successfully recapturing & recirculating the atmospheric carbon in our everyday lives, this carbon restoration project simultaneously cuts down the existing carbon in the atmosphere and potential emissions without attempting to change human behaviour.
In addition to speed, impact, scale & versatility, Solarium has if not the cheapest production rate in the world and aims to drive it down even further at the Gt scale. So we aim to match or beat the prices of high carbon-emitting raw materials and products used in the market today.
Our main profits will come from those in-demand byproducts, but the market value of our organic carbon tokens will grant us the liquidity we need to achieve our 8.22 GtC/year target while making you profits for holding the coin, each increasing the other's value.
To mitigate the risk of the dynamic peg against the market value of all our commodities, we're first setting the standard price of each byproduct, and varying our control over distribution.
Then, we allow demand levels to either appreciate the value of each commodity or depreciate to that baseline.
And to prepare for the unexpected affecting ESU's price, we're including smart mechanisms in our contract to automate minting & burning, keeping the coin stable and focused on long-term operational capital to reach our 25-year goal.
If we need to make market interventions, the Reserve & Stability Management Node will oversee our actions as the buyer of last resort to keep the system running.

Fear Index
Derived from global levels of atmospheric carbon & planetary albedo reported, our yearly emissions (5 GtC/year) & expected backlog (411 GtC), this index is designed to proactively detect insufficient progress towards the 50% emissions recapture & restoration goal.
A rising Fear Index + worsening environmental consequences would inform governance decisions and trigger more aggressive interventions to fund our project, utilising this "fear" to drive corrective actions rather than letting it destabilise the coin.
Calm Index
Informed by the minimum daily production required to meet the overarching 50% emissions recapture goal at 8.22 GtC/year, the Calm Index helps maintain the coin's stability by indicating consistent progress and underlying value creation,
particularly when facing increasing environmental disasters, their resulting conflicts & uncertainties. (as conceptualised in the "Near-Zero" article)
This has been achieved in an 800-gallon open pond completely harvested ~3.4 times.
The goal of organic carbon (ESU) is to raise funding from Africans & climate investors worldwide to kick off the project at full scale; for urgent climate action.
What if our pollution rate increases?
We're cooked. The pivot that determines success is how quickly we can scale this up. If we're successfully on track, we can even increase our capture rate.
Solarium accepts our limitations by aiming for at least 50% removal as our baseline, understanding that even that is far better than doing nothing. In addition, there are other companies out there working hard to drop our emissions, and our joint efforts will restabilise the planet.
What if the growth rate is low in open systems?
We've calculated for the worst-case scenario (0.01g/L) and found the project still feasible. This worst case will require larger water volumes of which the Earth's oceans are abundant.
We will also stay steadfast in our study to ensure it stays optimal, using all the intelligence & technology at our disposal to reach our goal. Microalgae are resilient and will survive current projections of environmental stress.
