Non-Canonical Syntax

Joint project with Dr. Sven Leuckert from TU Dresden

At the Non-Canonical Syntax of English Symposium in Dresden, 2017

Combining our research interests in English in South Korea (me) and non-canonical syntax (Sven Leuckert), we investigated the use of topicalization and dislocation in Korean(ized) English. For this, we manually annotated the SPOKE corpus for topicalization and left- and right-dislocation. The results of this study have been published in the journal English World-Wide as:

  • Leuckert, Sven and Sofia Rüdiger. 2020. “Non-Canonical Syntax in an Expanding Circle Variety: Fronting in Spoken Korean(ized) English.” English World-Wide 41(1): 33-58.

Our next research project (currently in progress) delves into the realm of non-canonical syntax online.

Presentation at the ISLE5 conference in London, 2018

I am member of the DFG-funded research network "Syntax Beyond the Canon" (organized by Dr. Teresa Pham and Dr. Sven Leuckert), which investigates the use of non-canonical syntax in English.
