Instructions for using the NVivo's automated transcription service:
Go to the NVivo Transcription page and log in with the username and password provided at the bottom of this page. (If you do not have access, ask a faculty member to help.)
In the Upload Media Files section, click and drag your audio/video file into the box, or click on the browse button to find it on your computer. Note: Media files are automatically deleted in 90 days; also, there is a 4-hour, 4 GB media file limit for each file uploaded.
Click on the Upload button. (You can check the Auto-transcribe option if you want the file to be immediately transcribed without giving you the chance to set different options; in that case, skip the next step.)
In the Media Files section, click on the Select language drop-down menu and select English (or whatever language you wish). Then click on the TRANSCRIBE link to the right. (Alternatively, you can check multiple files and then click on the Transcribe button above.)
It will take several minutes for the file(s) to be transcribed. When the file(s) are done, they will appear in the Transcripts section at the bottom.
Click on Open Transcript. You can download the transcript by clicking on Export on the left and selecting Export.DOCX (to download it as a Microsoft Word file) or Export.TXT (to download it as a plain-text file).
Alternatively, if you wish to correct the transcript before downloading it, you can do so within the interface. Use the play button at the bottom to play the audio; the spoken text will be underlined in real time. Click on the text in the window, which will then allow you to make edits directly. If the transcription software mistook a single speaker for two speakers, you can merge them into a single speaker by hovering over the SPEAKER3, etc., heading for their spoken segment, clicking on the red edit button that appears, and then choosing the speaker (e.g., SPEAKER1) to whom this spoken segment should actually be attributed. Make sure to click on the Save button on the left when you are done making changes. Then click on one of the Export options.
Once you download the transcript, you should delete any of your files in the list so that other people can't see the file. To do so, check the box next to the file(s) in the Transcripts list and click on the trash can icon above. Click Confirm.
Note: Some services offer free trials.
