The SOCIOEMOVE project aims to promote the development of socio-emotional skills in higher education through Virtual Exchange (VE), a technology-based pedagogical method that allows geographically distant students to collaborate on team tasks. The initiative responds to recent changes in education, with particular emphasis on the need for skills beyond mere knowledge, including social, personal and emotional capacities that are essential for well-being and employability.
The cornerstone of SOCIOEMOVE is research into how VE can facilitate socio-emotional interactions in the face of the difficulties posed by traditionally in-person learning environments. By comparing experimental groups that incorporate the use of VE with control groups following standard methods, the project analyzes specific behaviors and the technological tools that best enable the development of these skills. Within the framework of the Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the project focuses on five key competencies: collaboration, effectiveness, engagement, emotional regulation, and openness to novelty. These dimensions are analyzed using digital tools such as 3D virtual worlds, Zoom, Google Meet, and asynchronous platforms like Padlet or Flip. This approach seeks to facilitate data-driven analysis of the influence these tools have on socio-emotional development, as well as whether VE is a sustainable alternative or a support in terms of physical mobility in education.
The impact of SOCIOEMOVE also includes the creation of materials and the training of teaching staff to effectively integrate VE. The project provides resources such as good practice guides and manuals that are transferable to both educational and professional contexts, beyond higher education. The results will be shared at seminars for educators, stakeholders, and the general public to promote the use of VE in various learning environments. SOCIOEMOVE also supports Sustainable Development Goal 4.4 on education and equitable employment, teaching students the socio-emotional skills needed for personal and professional success.
