Workshop Description
Extended Reality (XR), including VR, AR, and MR, is transforming how people interact and collaborate. Beyond mirroring real-world communication, XR enables social augmentation, the intentional enrichment of social and emotional cues that can deepen engagement, improve clarity, and support more inclusive experiences. These possibilities also raise important questions about design choices, evaluation methods, and ethical implications.
This workshop brings together researchers, designers, and practitioners to explore the future of social augmentation in XR. Across two 90-minute sessions, participants will take part in a keynote, Mini-Thematic Sessions featuring joint presentations of accepted abstracts, and collaborative activities aimed at generating new concepts and frameworks. Through focused discussions and hands-on group work, the workshop will spark fresh perspectives on how augmented social cues can shape communication in XR environments.
Call for partecipations
We invite submissions of extended abstracts of 5 to 9 pages (excluding references) in the single-column CEUR-WS format on Social XR, understood as Extended Reality (XR) systems enriched with social and emotional augmentations. Submissions may address research, design, implementation, or practical applications in domains such as education, healthcare, professional collaboration, creative practice, and entertainment.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Social augmentation techniques for VR, AR, and MR environments
Adaptive and context-sensitive Social XR systems integrating AI
Methods for enhancing communication through expressive avatars, gaze modulation, or augmented facial expressions
Multimodal approaches to interpreting and responding to social and affective signals
Evaluation protocols and metrics for social engagement, trust, empathy, and user experience in Social XR
Ethical, privacy, and inclusivity considerations in socially augmented systems
Integration of social cues across physical and virtual environments
Tools and frameworks for designing, prototyping, and deploying Social XR applications
Domain-specific applications, including collaborative learning, therapy, remote teamwork, and creative or performative experiences
Innovative solutions for scalable, adaptive, and context-aware social augmentation
To recognize outstanding contributions, the workshop will present three awards: Best Extended Abstract and Best Student Extended Abstract and Best Presentation.
Accepted papers may also be considered for a possible Special Issue in a journal, such as the Empathic Computing Journal.
