Racial Justice

The Racial Justice subcommittee at UUCR holds discussions of our hopes and dreams for the role that UUCR can play in advancing racial justice in the greater Reston Community. It also represents UUCR in VOICE (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement), a non-partisan coalition of more than 50 faith organizations standing up for equal opportunity in our communities, respect for all, tolerance, and peaceful change.

Mission

To dismantle racism through individual and congregational actions, educating our community, initiating and maintaining accountable relationships with Reston and Northern Virginia racial justice partners in order to affirm and promote a diverse multicultural Beloved Community that supports the UUCR mission to be an inclusive, ethical, and spiritual community.

UUCR Holds Peaceful Demonstration for Racial Justice in Support of the #BlackLivesMatter Movement

On Friday, June 5th, more than 60 members and friends of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston held a peaceful demonstration along the side of the road at 1625 Wiehle Avenue. The demonstration concluded with participants, holding signs and flags, "taking a knee" in memory of George Floyd for 9 minutes.

RACIAL JUSTICE LIBRARY

The UUCR Racial Justice Subcommittee has accumulated a rich resource as a Google Document that includes links links to, and brief descriptions of, a wide variety of videos, books, websites, curricula, and other resources related to anti-racism. It is no longer enough to 'not be racist.' Anti-racists actively oppose racism and do everything they can to promote racial tolerance.

Scaffolding Resources for Anti-racism

June 14, 2020

Scaffolding is a process in which teachers model or demonstrate how to solve a problem, and then step back, offering support as needed. The theory is that when students are given the support they need while learning something new, they stand a better chance of using that knowledge independently.

The goal of this scaffolding resource is to facilitate growth for white folks to become allies, and eventually accomplices, for anti-racist work. These resources have been ordered in an attempt to make them more accessible.

Here is the link. This resource is being updated in an ongoing way.

Urge our U.S. Senators to Support George Floyd Justice in Policing Act S.3912 July 06, 2020

The UU General Assembly delegates passed an Action of Immediate Witness calling us to address police practices. The UUA president Rev. Dr. Susan Frederick-Gray said “This moment calls us to be prophetic and to imagine a world without policing...that centers collective care, community investment, and restorative justice, rather than surveillance, punishment, incarceration and policing.” Tell our Senators to pass the Justice in Policing Act (H.R.7120 / S.3912), developed by the Congressional Black Caucus. The bill passed in the House and now awaits Senate consideration.See the related flyer here, with instructions and sample letter: drive.google.com/file/d/178AyJT89k3cfTH0rPP3o3tGJZKoik4Lo/view?usp=drivesdk
