The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), also known as Pusa Institute, is a premier agricultural research institution in India. The Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding, founded in 1941 during the Indian Congress Session at BHU, Varanasi, is the oldest and most esteemed organization in India dedicated to the advancement of genetics and plant breeding. It was established by a group of pioneering geneticists and plant breeders, led by Dr. B.P. Pal, who became the Society's first Secretary and Editor of its official publication, the Indian Journal of Genetics & Plant Breeding. The Society's first President was Sir T.S. Venkataraman. Over the years, the Society has seen distinguished leaders, including Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, the Father of the Green Revolution in India, and other prominent scientists like Dr. W. Burns, Dr. K. Ramaiah, and Dr. A.B. Joshi. The Society, registered under the Societies Act in 1951, has grown significantly since its inception, now boasting over 2,000 members from India and abroad, including many life members, foreign members, and honorary fellows.
The Society's primary objectives are to advance research in genetics and plant breeding, disseminate knowledge in these fields, and facilitate collaboration among students and professionals in related sciences. These goals are achieved through various activities, including the publication of research in its widely circulated journal, the organization of national and international symposia, and the institution of several awards and memorial lectures in honor of its distinguished members. Notable awards include the Dr. B.P. Pal Memorial Lectures and the Dr. S. Ramanujam Memorial Award for Genetics and Plant Breeding. Additionally, the Society founded the XVth Genetics Congress Trust in 1985 to support genetics and plant breeding research.
True to its mission, the Society continues to stay at the forefront of developments in genetics and plant breeding, fostering active engagement among its members through seminars, symposia, and conferences. It also plays a crucial role in shaping national policies and promoting international cooperation in the field of genetics and plant breeding.
