About me
About me
I'm Sneha De silva, a fourth year undergraduate pursuing a Bachelor of Education in English (Hons) degree at Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT).
I'm currently doing my internship as an English language teacher at Sussex College Malabe--a well reputed English medium school in Sri Lanka. Through this role, I had the privilege of teaching secondary level students of grade 6 and grade 7, designing well planned and engaging lessons by focusing on both linguistic accuracy and communicative fluency. My classroom approach highlights interactive and collaborative learning, inclusivity and reflection with the aim of making English accessible and enjoyable for every learner.
Before starting my journey as a teacher, the experience I gained through my academic projects, group facilitation and community involvement as an undergraduate has always been an immense support to improve my interpersonal and leadership skills. These experiences have helped me to become an empathetic educator, going beyond the books and classroom to make a very effective, interesting and comfortable learning environment for the learners.
I believe that teaching is rather a transformative journey than a dynamic one. As an English language educator, the aim is to not only nurture the language skills of the learners, but also their critical thinking and confidence. My goal as a teacher is to guide the students to express themselves meaningfully, encouraging curiosity and a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.
Through this e-portfolio, my aim is to document my professional journey, reflections and ongoing growth as a teacher committed to continuous development in English language education.
Co-Curricular & Extracurricular Engagement
Throughout my school and university journey, I have actively engaged in a wide range of academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities that have contributed to my growth as a well-rounded learner and future educator. I was a member of the Model United Nations Club at Southlands College, participating in several conferences including SLMUN, which strengthened my public speaking and critical thinking skills. I also contributed to school life as a member of the School Link Club, English Drama Club, and Debating Team, and further expanded my interests as a member of the Astronomy Club at Southlands College, which nurtured my curiosity and love for scientific exploration. Moreover, I also have a strong background in music. I completed ABRSM Western Music examinations and was an active member of my school’s Western Music Club, through which I participated in numerous competitions over the years—achieving victories and enhancing my skills in performance and musical discipline.
At university, I continued my leadership journey as a member of the Rotaract Club of SLIIT. I was a member of RotaVerse 2023, representing the group “Hera”, where I collaborated with fellow Rotaractors to successfully complete the event’s initiatives. In addition, I served as the Co-Chair for “LifeLead” ; a mental health awareness project conducted as part of the "STRIDE 23/24" project series. In this role, I supported planning, organizing, and hosting the session, helping create a meaningful and supportive space for participants to learn about mental well-being. These experiences strengthened my teamwork, leadership, and event-management skills while allowing me to contribute positively to the Rotaract community.
Academically, I completed a group research project titled “Bridging Language Gaps: A Needs Analysis of English for Specific Purposes for Undergraduates from Non-English Majors in Sri Lanka,” which allowed me to explore learner needs, design data-collection tools, and propose informed educational solutions. Moreover, I have completed my Diploma in International Studies at the University of Kelaniya (which I'm expected to graduate with my diploma in 2026). The program helped me develop a strong understanding of global and cultural perspectives.
