MANUFACTURING & QUALITY CASE STUDIES
Process Improvement Project - Westover Wire Winding, Inc.
This case study focuses on the Westover Wire Works, examining the winder manufacturing process for transformers. The main objective is to identify areas with high reject rates and propose solutions to improve product quality and operational efficiency using Six Sigma principles. Analysis of the data reveals that incorrect core usage is a significant issue across all three winding machines, with Winder 1 showing the poorest performance overall.
Recommended implementing a high-priority Six Sigma project to address the root causes of defects, particularly focusing on inaccurate core builds.
Suggested introducing inspection procedures and work instructions to rectify the issue with incorrect cores. The analysis also highlights specific problems for each winder, such as twisted wire and broken leads for Winder 1, abraded wire and wrong wire for Winder 2, and bad wind and wrong core for Winder 3.
The case study concludes that implementing these recommendations could lead to significant improvements in product quality and operational effectiveness.
Middle County Hospital
This case study focuses on two Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) projects at the Middle County Hospital. The first project aims to reduce the number of redo's in the imaging area, including MRIs, X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds.
Analyzed data from old and new imaging procedures, created control charts, and calculated sigma levels to assess improvements.
Recommended conducting root cause analysis, implementing best practices, and striving for higher sigma levels.
The second project addresses improving the hospital's food delivery service.
Analyzed patient feedback using Pareto charts and time series plots, identifying bad taste, lack of choice, and late delivery as the primary issues.
Proposed a new food service workflow to address these concerns and enhance patient satisfaction.
Both projects emphasize the importance of continuous monitoring and improvement to achieve long-term, sustainable goals in hospital operations.
