Delivery Components
By May 2023 the counseling team will conduct at least four classroom guidance lessons based on campus needs assessment results, college and career readiness needs, and Counseling Advisory Council (CAC) feedback to reach 95 % of our student population.
By the end of the school year, counselors will develop and implement eight lessons with relevant and purposeful activities, delivered once a month starting October 2022 and ending May 2023. These lessons aim to address student interest in increasing motivation, resiliency, and improve outlook.
Counselors will meet individually with each of their grade level students at least once during the school year to promote academic development and address personal and social-emotional needs. During individual meetings, counselors will collaborate with students to plan for academic success, including creation of 4-year plans for 8th grade students.
Using CAC feedback, counselors will highlight topics during "Coffee with the Counselors" meetings throughout the school year. At least one meeting will be focused on providing an overview of high school graduation planning for our families who are new to Texas and those at risk of not graduating.

In October 2022 our campus administered our campus needs assessment. Our assessment data showed that 33% of SMS students struggled with staying motivated and 7%, or 80 students, reported no sense of belonging at our school. To increase student motivation and help to create a strong sense of community and belonging at our school, the counseling team worked to design a monthly student workshop series called Renovate Your Mind to address these concerns.
While student attendance varied across the eight monthly workshops, the same twenty-five students were give the pre and post assessment to evaluate their level of motivation and sense of belonging before and after participating in the workshop series. We saw positive growth across both areas of concern.

Our teachers, parents, and students reported an increase in difficulty dealing with peer pressure during the fall semester. Counselors attempted to address the problems through advisory lessons, guidance lessons, parent meetings, restorative conferences, and individual counseling. While these efforts were somewhat effective, some of our students continued to struggle with setting and sticking to healthy boundaries with their peers. As a result, they were experiencing peer conflict and emotional dysregulation.
The SMS Counseling team coordinated with our community partner Expose Excellence. Leaders from Expose Excellence Youth Program came to our school to present a guided lesson on refusal skills to a small group of students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. During the lesson, students were able to practice verbalizing boundaries and work through scenarios to practice refusal skills in different social situations.
