About Business Information Management I

Welcome to BIM! BIM stands for Business Information Management. Students develop technology skills with applications to personal and business situations focusing on spreadsheets, databases, presentation management, networking, operation systems and emerging technology with a review of keyboard and word processing. After completing BIM, each student will be able to successfully use Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Publisher. Students will be able to identify how each of these is applicable in different personal and business situations. Students will have opportunity to obtain an OPAC (Office Proficiency Assessment) Certification for each application. This course offers articulated course credit with Austin Community College ITSC 1309.

This course offers students:

  • A high school credit
    • Upon successful completion of the course, the student receives high school credit. To be considered for a high school credit, students must earn a grade of 70 or higher in the class.
  • An "Articulated" College Credit
    • Save time and money on a college education! Articulated course credits, also referred to as credits in escrow, offer students the chance to earn and redeem course credit hours once they establish a transcript in Austin Community College while still a high school student. An Articulation Agreement with community colleges make it possible for students to earn college credit for courses successfully completed in high school. To be considered for articulated credit, students must earn a grade of 80 or higher in the class, a grade of 70 or higher on the ACC-created end-of-course exam, and meet all high school and college course requirements..
    • This course is equivalent to ITSC 1309: Integrated Software Applications I at Austin Community College and offers 3.0 college credit hours. They are held in escrow and once students establish a transcript through an Austin Community College, they are placed on the student's transcript, free of charge.

    • Because Articulated College Credit (ACC) means:
      • Earn Technical or Community college credits (Articulated College Credit) in grades 8 - 12

      • Choose a specific Technical or Community College career program or a major that may lead to transfer options to a university
  • Office Proficiency Assessment and Certification
    • The Office Proficiency Assessment and Certification (OPAC) System measures the most critical skills and abilities required in today's administrative positions.
    • Students can demonstrate their competence and excellence in Microsoft Office professional skills.
    • Successful students will be able to list their certifications on their resumes, portfolios, etc.
    • OPAC Test Descriptions:
      • Spreadsheet: This test measures the test taker's ability to perform the following functions in a specific spreadsheet application: Edit, Insert, Print, Formulas, Delete, and Save
      • Microsoft Excel (Basic): This test assesses basic skill level of Microsoft Excel including, but not limited to, the following operations related to data and text manipulation: Edit, Rework, Sort, Format, and Relocate.
      • Microsoft Excel (Intermediate): This test assesses an intermediate skill level of Microsoft Excel including, but not limited to, the following operations: Sorting, Adding a Header, Creating/Moving Worksheets, Creating Charts, Renaming Worksheets, Inserting Comments, and Unhide Rows.
      • Microsoft PowerPoint: This test measures the test taker's ability to perform the following functions in Microsoft PowerPoint presentation software including, but not limited to the following operations: Create New Presentations, Insert and Modify Graphics, Modify, Transition, and Animate, Add Hyperlilnks, Change Background, and Add Speaker's Notes.
      • Microsoft Windows: The OPAC Windows test measures ability to navigate in and customize the most popular Microsoft operating systems.
      • Microsoft Word (Basic): This test measures the ability to correctly modify and format a professional document in Microsoft Word, including but not limited to the following functions: Creating text, Tables, Editing Text, References, and Page Format.
      • Microsoft Word (Intermediate): This test measures an intermediate skill level of Microsoft Word, including but not limited to, the following operations: Tables, Unique Headers, Bullets/Numbers, Sections, AutoComplete, Footnotes, Symbols/Pictures, and Borders
