The following procedure should be followed in the event of alarms, drills or emergencies that require evacuation of the building. If a fire alarm sounds while you are on duty, it is the responsibility of all staff members to instruct patrons to leave quickly and calmly through the main exit (front doors). If you notice smoke or if there is any other reason that the main exit would not be safe, direct patrons to other exits located at the north and south ends of the building.
If you see fire or smoke
Pull the fire alarm by the North or South stairway.
Begin evacuation.
Dial 13 or 585.275.3333 from a safe place.

Evacuation procedure:
Staff members without evacuation duties leave quickly and calmly through the main exit (front doors). If you notice smoke or if there is any other reason that the main exit would not be safe, direct patrons to the exit stairs located at the north and south ends of the building. Above all, remain calm.
The Special Collections Attendant will inform patrons in the reading room to evacuate the building and will replace rare materials currently in the vault before leaving the building.
One Circulation/Reserve Desk Attendant will quickly walk through the third and fourth floors informing patrons that they must exit the library immediately. Pay attention to the public carrels on the third floor (Gibbs Street side) and the graduate carrels on the fourth floor. Verify that everyone has evacuated the floor and inform the 2nd Circulation Desk Attendant of this upon leaving the building. On the 4th floor, check all carrels and the reading room in addition to the stacks. On the 3rd floor, check carrels, periodicals rooms, and listening room in addition to the stacks.
The 2nd Circulation/Reserve Desk Attendant should remain at the desk until the other attendant and/or security officer verifies that all patrons have been evacuated from all three floors.
The Reference Desk Attendant will inform patrons in the reference area and in the second-floor stacks that they must exit the library immediately, verify that everyone has evacuated the floor, and inform the Circulation Desk Attendant of this upon leaving the building.
Only after the alarm has stopped sounding and DPS verifies it is safe may staff and patrons re-enter the building.
