Teaching
I believe in fostering a welcoming environment for all students inside and outside the classroom
Today's students have access to unlimited information, which is challenging the teaching paradigm of the 20th century. Instructors are no longer the gate-keepers to knowledge, but rather guides to the most relevant information and more importantly, how to use information to improve their live's and others. That is why I emphasize:
Student-centered learning.
Helping students learn how to learn using metacognitive strategies.
Transferrable skills through project-based learning.
Student-Centered learning
Active learning techniques
Inclusive policies and flexibility:
Excused absences for dependent care
Flexible assignment formats that cater to students strengths
Emphasis on transferrable skills
Learning objectives for my courses emphasize application of information, so that students develop skills applicable in careers and fields beyond the geosciences.
Metacognition
or "thinking about thinking" is a reflective technique designed to help students learn how to be more effective learners.
