There are 3 parts of the brain I introduce: the thinking brain, the emotional brain, and the survival brain.
- When you use your thinking brain you make better choices, you most likely feel calm. You also learn best when you are using your thinking brain. Sometimes we do not always use this part of our brain and that is okay but it is important we know what part of our brain we are using so we can make better choices and learn to our best ability!
- Sometimes we use our emotional brain, this is when we are feeling big emotions like sadness or anger. We do not always make the best choices when we use our emotional brain. It is not "bad" to be in our emotional brain but it is hard to think things through when we are using our emotional part of the brain. Ever been so upset that you made a mistake? I sure have! What is important is that we learn from it, and learn how to calm ourselves to make better choices.
- The survival part of our brain is what keeps us safe. This part of the brain tells you to run when a you see a bear! or tells you to swat a bee away! But sometimes our brain goes into "survival mode" when it doesn't need to like maybe your brother or sister hid in your room and jumped out and scared you so bad you screamed and ran.. oops! Your survival brain thought you were in danger!
Blue Zone: Low energy, not ready to learn. You need to re-energize.
Green Zone: Calm, ready to learn! You learn BEST in this zone.
Yellow Zone: High energy, with very little control over your body and emotions. The "silly zone". You need to slow down!
Red Zone: Intense emotions, no control over your body and emotions. You need to stop/take a break.
That is okay! People are in different zones throughout the day. Sometimes we are in two zones at the same time. There is no right or wrong zone and one is not better than the other. It is just how you are feeling.. and feelings are OKAY!!
There are strategies you can do to help yourself re-energize or calm down. Not all strategies work for one person. Some students like to take deep breaths.. others need to talk about their problem! There is no right or wrong strategy. These strategies are to help you feel in control of your body and emotions.
