October 25, 2024 - Lecture by architect Anamarija Rodak on the New European Bauhaus
Today, architect Anamarija Rodak presented the New European Bauhaus initiative to the eighth-grade students. Launched in 2021, this initiative is an environmental, economic, and cultural project aimed at collaboratively designing more attractive, sustainable, and inclusive ways of living together, based on three core values: sustainability, aesthetics, and inclusiveness.
Our guest introduced us to all aspects of spatial design, the factors considered during planning, examples of the Bauhaus initiative that are already being implemented, and encouraged us to think critically about new, untested ideas that we may encounter in the future.
This educational and highly engaging lecture opened up many new questions, which we will continue to explore in upcoming projects.

Brave Students and Staff Mark World Car-Free Day by Biking
On October 20, 2024, a group of courageous students and school staff biked to school despite adverse weather conditions, joining this year’s celebration of World Car-Free Day and European Mobility Week. The aim of this initiative is to raise public awareness about pollution caused by frequent and often unnecessary car use, a habit many easily fall into. Additionally, the initiative promotes movement and social interaction as healthier, more sustainable choices, benefiting both individuals and the environment.
October 16, 2024. - Erasmus Day 2024.
At Barilović Primary School, we celebrated Erasmus Day for the second time on October 16, 2024. This year’s Erasmus Days were held from October 14 to 19 under the motto: *Six Days to Make Europe Shine!*
Our school joined the Erasmus+ programs in 2019 and is now a proud holder of Erasmus accreditation. Our goal is to introduce our students and the local community to the opportunities, examples of best practices, and success stories of the European Union’s largest program in education, training, youth, and sports.
This year, we chose to focus on Human Rights through various workshops. Students from grades 1 to 4 learned about Children's Rights in creative ways through workshops on topics such as *The Right to Art and Science*, *Tolerance*, *The Right to Education*, and an overview of all rights.
Students from grades 5 to 8 participated in workshops covering topics such as *Human Rights for All*, *The Right to Life and Dignity*, *Step Forward* (role-playing), *The Right to Personal Development*, and *The Right to Food, Clothing, a Safe Place to Live*, and meeting other essential needs.
After the workshops, we were joined by guests Ivica Srakočić, Tihana Car, and Meri Goldašić, who gave talks related to human rights. Ivica Srakočić also led a workshop with students on *How to Create a Podcast*.

During art class, sixth-grade students created jewelry from collected waste. The goal of this activity was to raise awareness about the importance of responsible waste management and to familiarize students with the possibilities of reusing various types of materials. The results of their months of creative work are currently on display in the school.
June 5, 2024. World Environment Day.
Students and teachers of the subject teaching today marked World Environment Day with a special cleaning initiative in their community. Some students cleaned the area around the school, others focused on the center of our town, while some cleaned the local bathing area where they will soon be spending their summer afternoons. Thinking globally, we acted locally, as befits this special day, emphasizing the need for environmental care even more.
May 23, 2024. Vegetable Planting at the Belaj Primary School.
It's the time of the year for the most intense work in gardens across our country, including our school garden. For this reason, the students of the Belaj Primary School are spending every free moment in and around the school greenhouse. This time, they planted their seedlings of various vegetables and also harvested the first delicious strawberries of the season from their hard work.
May 22, 2024. "Working for Change."
As part of the eco project "Working for Change," the first graders learned how to use drinking water more efficiently. They discovered that taking a bath consumes about 140 liters of water, while a shower uses only 25 liters. By participating in an experiment about brushing their teeth, they concluded that letting the water run for 2 minutes while brushing their teeth wastes an unnecessary 6 liters of water.

Open Days of the Polytechnic of Karlovac
Students from the fifth and sixth grades visited the Open Days of the Polytechnic of Karlovac and attended the workshop "Chemical Reactions and Environmental Actions," which was led by Professor Jasna Halambek and senior laboratory technician Ivana Kolić in a very engaging manner. From Professor Sandra Zavadlav, we learned a lot about Arabica/Robusta coffee, its journey from Brazil to the port of Rijeka. We found out whether coffee is healthy and how we can reduce our ecological footprint.
The students of the fifth and sixth grades visited the Open Days of the Polytechnic of Karlovac and attended the workshop "Chemical Reactions and Environmental Actions," which was led by Professor Jasna Halambek and senior laboratory technician Ivana Kolić in a very engaging manner. The professional study program in Food Technology is focused on acquiring and applying practical knowledge necessary for entering the job market within the food industry. From Professor Sandra Zavadlav, we learned a lot about Arabica/Robusta coffee, its journey from Brazil to the port of Rijeka and further to our most famous roasteries like Frank's. Its health safety is monitored at the Polytechnic of Karlovac. We learned whether coffee is healthy and how we can reduce our ecological footprint. We are all familiar with the chicory plant as it grows in our gardens and meadows, and from it, a very tasty and healthy white coffee is prepared. A shocking fact for us was how harmful energy drinks containing up to 27 tablespoons of sugar are, not to mention other ingredients that only temporarily boost our alertness, after which we become dependent on an even stronger dose. We want to continue our collaboration with the Polytechnic of Karlovac and educate ourselves on topics related to sustainable development.
The workshop was led by the principalVesna Car, who passed on the knowledge acquired during the mobility to Greece to her colleagues.

In the summer of 2023, religious teacher Brigita Gojak was in Porto on the "Future classroom" course on the use of digital technologies in teaching in the 21st century. In addition to education on the use of digital tools in teaching, the course participants also thought about changing the teaching paradigm. Teaching that is in line with the developmental dynamics of students in the 21st century is not based entirely on technology, but technology complements existing teaching methods, responding to the demands of the developmental dynamics of our students.
In the context of such a form of teaching, the teacher held a workshop for her colleagues in which she introduced them to the use of the EdPuzzle digital tool. This tool allows you to create custom videos that can include various comments or comprehension questions.
The workshop took place in a relaxed atmosphere and resulted in customized video works from different fields.
The farm animals have run away, we have to help the farmer! We go outside with a map on which the places where animals were last seen are recorded. Will we manage to save them all?
Learning must be fun and relaxed, then it is best remembered. The day is beautiful, the sun is so warm that long sleeves are quite enough, and the school environment is the best place to spend time. Next to the school is the old town of Barilović.
The animals we are looking for are actually puzzles on pieces of paper, scattered around the environment, but also marked on the map: (see table)
When we have found and solved all the puzzles, we return to class to put the animals in the barn, the game is FunnyFarm or Happy Farm.

In the fun in the fresh air, the hour flew by. Until next time,
your Kim Džananović, animal and physics lover :)

On February 21, a workshop titled "ICT Tools" was held. Teacher Ivana presented the digital tools that were used during a course in Barcelona. The course focused on exploring and applying the latest information and communication technologies (ICT) in the educational process, as well as developing skills necessary for the 21st century. The organizer of the course in Barcelona was Euromentor (Empowering Educators, Transforming Education).
Eighteen teachers participated in the workshop. Familiar tools such as Kahoot, Padlet, and Plickers were presented. Additionally, a new digital tool, Jeopardy Labs, was introduced. Together, we got acquainted with the tool. I demonstrated to the teachers what can be done and how to use it in the classroom. Jeopardy Labs allows us to create a customized jeopardy template without PowerPoint. The games we create can be played online from anywhere in the world.
We concluded the workshop in a creative way, and the atmosphere was pleasant and joyful.
Laudato Si - Religious Education Class on the Pope's Encyclical on Caring for the Environment
During September, in anticipation of Mission Sunday, religious education classes were dedicated to exploring Pope Francis' encyclical "Laudato Si," which focuses on caring for our common home. Using materials from the CAFOD website, students reflected on the impact of climate on everyday life and the possibilities for environmental preservation as an expression of concern for the created world.
26.10.2023.
IAlthough we have been participating in Erasmus since 2019, this year we participated for the first time in celebrating Erasmus Day. Numerous preparatory activities were held in which all students of the school participated. On Friday, October 13, 2023, the home school held an integrated day on the topic of the European Year of Skills, which included five workshops:
- making birdhouses - class teaching
- making a hotel for insects
- augmented reality workshop
- language workshop
- mathematical workshop
The Erasmus day was concluded with an open panel for students, parents and students, where everyone had the opportunity to share their experiences related to Erasmus. We are happy that all opinions were very positive and they encouraged and motivated us to work on new Erasmus projects. Students are happy to go on mobility trips because this way they develop different life skills, communicate in a foreign language, make new friends, raise their self-esteem and develop a sense of belonging to the European civilization and cultural circle. The most important thing is that they have a lot of support from their parents. We look forward to the accreditation results that will be published in January. The Erasmus projects Think globally, act locally for students and SMILE for teachers are ongoing.
