Throughout the year, students have been working on identifying Core Words in academics, therapy sessions and daily routines.
See below 2 sets of Core Words cards - traditional presentation and high contrast presentation for students with visual impairments.
Core Words can be presented in a number of different ways:
~ show a card and say the word - child demonstrate the meaning through gestures;
~ say a core word while holding up 2 Core Word cards - child can reach for, point to, or look at the word;
~ say a Core Word while holding up only the card for that word - child can focus on word card visually and/or track the card as you move it.

Boardmaker Online is a frequently used resource in many of our programs. Picture symbols can be created to assist with communication and choice making as well as with supporting academic instruction. These can be printed or used directly on the computer - students can identify choices by pointing, activating a switch or looking at the picture they are choosing.
Boardmaker Community is free at all times (though access is somewhat limited); there is a free 30 day trial of Boardmaker Personal (which includes access to the Community resources).
Boardmaker picture symbols are often used for visual schedules to help students structure their days and know what to expect - knowing what to expect can help to decrease anxiety and the behavioral responses that might be caused by this anxiety.
This menu of symbols does not cover a student’s entire school day, but includes pictures of many of the activities that are most likely to be replicated in the home setting during school closures. Generally, these would be cut out and placed in order vertically - you might choose to have your child remove or flip picture cards once an activity has been completed for the day. Two picture symbol files are being included; the same pictures are in each file. One set is smaller and easier for individual use, smaller spaces or use by children with higher level fine motor skills; the other set is larger to assist with group learning structure (if siblings are together), children with visual impairments and/or children who have difficulty grasping and manipulating the smaller symbols.
As with the School Routine Symbols, this menu of symbols does not cover a child’s entire home routine. However, given the uncertainty that the current change in their daily routine is causing for children, we thought it might be helpful to provide some home routine symbols as well. Again, 2 symbol files are being provided with the only difference being the size of the symbols.
For some children, seeing a full schedule can be overwhelming. To help provide them with structure in a more manageable way, First/Then boards are often used. These can be particularly helpful when children need to complete a non-preferred activity - this activity would be completed first and would be followed by a highly preferred activity. For example, first: math, then: iPad or first: brushing teeth, then: story time. to provide some home routine symbols as well. Again, 2 symbol files are being provided with the only difference being the size of the symbols.
