Advancing to Higher Salary

There are two ways that faculty members at SMC can progress to higher salary rates: "Step Advancement", earned through completing 30 LHE of service at SMC, and "Group Advancement", earned through completing higher degrees, courses and training. Both are explained in more detail below and the descriptions are valid for all kinds of faculty assignments.

Step Advancement

After working at SMC and completing the equivalent of a full-time annual load, all faculty members advance one step on the salary schedule until they reach the highest step, Step 22.

For full-time faculty, the step advancement occurs in Fall (or Summer, if they work that intersession).

For part-time faculty, LHE for step advancement is earned for all assignments worked in Fall and Spring semesters, and advancement occurs in the intersession or semester immediately after the semester in which they reached a multiple of 30 LHE. For example, if a part-time faculty member's assignment in fall increases their cumulative LHE from 28 to 33 LHE, their salary rate will move from Step 1 to Step 2, effective the next intersession or semester they teach. If they reach 60 or more LHE in Spring, they will move from Step 2 to Step 3 for their next assignment.

Step Advancement happens automatically - and you can track your progress as a part-time faculty member by looking in mProfessor under the "View Teaching Hours" link, then choosing pay type 89.

Group Advancement

The Group that you in determines which column across the salary schedule you are in. Group 1 is for folks with a Bachelors degree, Group 2 is
