Teaching and Learning

I began university teaching as a young and inexperienced postgraduate student. During my first few years of teaching, I had little understanding of how to teach at a university and was offered little support. As a result, I muddled into higher education teaching without thinking much about my teaching philosophy. Now, more than a decade later, I have finally had the opportunity to reflect carefully on my teaching philosophy through doing a postgraduate qualification in higher education teaching. This document lays out my teaching philosophy in detail, exploring the context in which I teach and the theories that have influenced my teaching and also discussing two case studies.

On the right, you can find a short video which discusses one of the case studies discussed in the document. If you have trouble playing the video, you can also access it here.

You might also want to read this article in which I discuss some of the challenges of teaching about Africa. The article is summarised in the blog to the left. Both the article and the blog deal with a course discussed in detail in my teaching philosophy document.
