Assessment

Graham Gibbs argues that assessment is 'the most powerful lever teachers have to influence the way in which students respond to courses and behave as learners'. Students shape their learning around their expectations about how they will be assessed. If this is so, then it is of vital importance to give very careful attention to assessment. In this document I reflect on assessment and discuss my attempts to introduce some new forms of assessment in a postgraduate course. I am hoping that these forms of assessment will be more effective and less anxiety-producing than the traditional exam pictured to the left (photo credit to bitjungle, details here).
