Throughout this semester, I wrote three food pieces. One was a bakery review, a Thanksgiving family recipe and a taco restaurant review. The bakery review and Thanksgiving recipe will be featured in the Austin American-Statesman.
Colorful, gluten-free and Asian-inspired? These treats are worth squeeing for. Located in a pink brick building, OMG Squee is an Asian American dessert shop known for fish-shaped cakes called taiyaki, soft serve, mochi doughnuts and macarons.
Founded by self-taught baker Sarah Lim, all treats are 100% gluten-free due to her experience with food sensitivities. The menu features rotating selections for soft serve and mochi doughnuts, with an emphasis on Asian-inspired flavors.
I had already tried the popular soft serve and taiyaki, so I focused on OMG Squee’s mochi doughnuts (all $3.95): ube berry, carrot cake, pandan surge, black sesame and chocolate five-spice.
Made with gluten-free mochi flour in place of flour, the doughnuts have a soft and chewy texture. Each one was decorated as a different animal, except for the ube berry, which featured a berry mascarpone topping with ube icing.
The flavors are familiar while introducing the customer to traditional Asian staples like the pandan surge, which combines the grassy taste of pandan with notes of vanilla and citrus. The chocolate five-spice was my favorite, which tasted sweet from the cinnamon and nutmeg, yet savory from the Chinese five-spice blend. – Sarah Matthews
