About the workshop

First workshop on emerging smart technologies and infrastructures for Smart Mobility And Sustainability

SMAS 2019 is the first workshop on emerging smart technologies and infrastructures for Smart Mobility And Sustainability. The workshop is part of the 25th Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking (ACM MobiCom 2019).

As world populations concentrate in cities, mobility in urban environments is becoming one of the most prominent and interesting research fields in the smart city context. The World Health Organization has recently released a report about Urban health, which claims that about 3.7 billion people live in cities today and that a further 1 billion people will be added by 2030, with 90% of the growth being in low- and middle-income countries. Efficient transport systems play a key-role in this context, because they provide economic and social opportunities and benefits that result in positive multipliers effects, such as improving the quality of life, making cities more healthy and suitable for all their citizens.

In this context, the widespread and pervasive diffusion of smart devices together with the availability of sensors, IoT, and smart objects, can play a key and strategic role in collecting information about mobility flows and about the urban environment, and in making such information available to the citizens and the policy makers who can act toward a sustainable development. In fact, one of the main global challenges to cope with for a sustainable development is transport and mobility, undisputed key issues of modern life affecting people's well-being and quality of life and impacting significantly the environment.

In this scenario, emerging sensing technologies and interconnected infrastructure can lead to more efficient transport systems and innovative mobility services, keeping into account the urgent need to foster a sustainable development.

This workshop aims to gather practitioners with different background and different perspective from both Academia and Industry to further the knowledge in the area of emerging smart technologies and infrastructures for Smart Mobility and sustainability. Novel proposals, best-practices, pitfalls and case studies from different and inter-disciplinary points of view will be well accepted.
