A "planned city" is often mistaken for a smart city. While smart cities collect data and use it to control technology, a planned city does not use statistics to control technological patterns. Planned city elements include eco friendly transportation systems, affordable and sustainable apartments, and city redesign to encourage more time spent outdoors. All of these elements benefit a society, but do not work around data collected from smart technology.
For example, Related Connect is an app for residents at Hudson Yards that replaces the apartment key with a smart-phone. This may seem like smart technology, but it does not collect or analyze data to make improvements.
Here is some of the smart technology being used at Hudson Yards.
