I am a dedicated 4th-year Software Engineering student at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU) with a strong passion for backend development. Currently, I am working on the IETP project, contributing to the Smart Rack System website as a backend developer. My expertise lies in Django, a skill I initially developed through GDSC AASTU. I’ve had the opportunity to apply my knowledge in real-world projects, including building a timetable generation system for Soft Net Company and automating Ethiopia’s land tenure contract system at Kefita Technology. I also completed a Library Management System for my capstone project and participated in a hackathon, where my team developed CamLink.

Week 1

We received an overview about the IETP project including its objectives, things we should put in mind while implementing methodologies when developing our project, guidelines , assessments and similar topics. I found one of my software engineering team mate and created a telegram group. then we proceed to visiting workshops, there I met 4 of my team mates and added each other on the telegram group. We picked a date to meet up and meet our advisor on the telegram discussion group.

Week 2

Me and My team mates mate up for the first time to introduce ourselves to one another and get to know each other well. We talked about different topics , brainstormed on different social problems and shared our thoughts. We got to know each other well and chose our group leader, in addition we came up with three potential project ideas and planned a day to meet up with our advisor.

We mate up with our advisor and discussed about our project ideas, and received advice on how we should come up with ideas , things we should in consideration , what kind of implementation method we are planning to use for each project and such things. Based on that we were told to reassessed our ideas.

Week 3

Me and my team mates had a meeting and came up with three potential project ideas we think it might be suitable for the IETP project and problem solving. We created a document on each ideas including explanation about the material requirements for developing the project, problems it aims to solve , development methodology , expected outcomes and challenges we will face. After creating the document for each file we sent it to our advisor and posted in on our telegram group so that we can discuss on it.

Week 4

We faced some issues choosing project title due to being unsure and looking for the most implementable one. Then we discussed with our advisor which project title to work with and landed on Smart Rack.

We came with the idea for smart rack from smart parking system , and intended to change the vehicle to bikes , making it more conventional , simple and implementable and putting in consideration of the fact that there is an increasing number of bikes in Addis Ababa.

We started discussing the functionalities , procedures we should take, what the architecture should look like , materials needed in general we brainstormed on it so that we can start the design process.

Week 5

This week we were asked to submit the project proposal. It was such a new experience for us, from gathering background data to planning the expected output. We implemented a lot of online researches and discussions among us . It was just like building up the projected it required a lot of focus and understanding of the project. We were discussing the work flow of the project over and over again to make sure we were all on the same page.

I my self worked on background and justification content of the proposal. And integrated it using google docs and finally assessed the whole document for consistency and smooth workflow , and submitted it .

Week 6

This week we proceed to dividing tasks among members based on our skills , voluntarism and department.

Me and my fellow software engineer team mates were given the task of building the website. So first we discussed the services provided by the website, user requirements , how the users access the website (login and sign up functionalities) and methods to apply when the user wants to lock the rack. We also discussed the frame works we are going to be using for the back-end and front end section of the website, which was React: for front-end and Django: for Back-end .

Week 7

Me and my fellow Software Engineer team mates discussed how we should proceed on developing the website. The sequence of tasks and when to complete which task.

The Figma was designed by one of our team mates. So based on that the front end development was setted to start, In addition to that we discussed how the front end communicates with the back-end. Functionalities expected from the back-end and how data is handled. I participated in the full development of the back-end. So after our discussion we decided to get the api end points to get done and front end pages get done in a weeks time.

Week 8

I was done with the api of the back-end including its documentation so that it will be easier the front-end to understand the end points functionalities while integrating them. In addition to that I created a workflow diagram of our system on how data is handled between front-end and back end and hoe the user uses the website.

We created a github repository to push our codes on and integrate them while solving issues that arise while integrating in parallel and communicating on methods to implement functionalities.

Week 9

The final works of the software engineer. After facing some difficulties, the front-end got integrated well with the backend and data transfers were handled very well. We enhanced the qr code scanning functionality and user login and sign up.

We then proceed to integrating the backend with the esp to send and receive signals about the status of the rack and command the arduino to lock or unlock the specific rack accessed by the user using qr code. It was difficult due to the fact that we were new to it and implementing websocket to connect the esp with the backend.But after going through a lot of challenges we finally succeeded in communicating with the arduino and exchanging signals simultaneously.

The blender design for the rack was developed.

Week 10

It was an incredible experience when we gave the adviser a presentation of our accomplishments. She was really supportive and complimented our initial efforts, which boosted our self-esteem. She gave insightful criticism during the presentation, pointing out areas in which we may do better. She identified certain features of the user interface and offered some adjustments to improve the user experience as a whole.

The rack was built using wood based on the design made last week. And got ready to be integrated with the software of the program.

Week 11

We integrated the rack with the software and gained a satisfying result. The project was complete and allowed us to experience and learn lot of things , in addition to that it gave us the opportunity to experience working in teams with different people with different perspective on things.

Now we proceed to preparing the project report and preparing for presentation.
