Malaysia's first Small G Protein Research group has garnered recognition both locally and internationally. Our aim is to understand the role of small G proteins particularly Rho Family as a bridge between cancer and immunological diseases such as Primary Immunodeficiency. We seek to utilize the ability of small G protein molecular switches as potential biomarkers, diagnostics, and therapeutic targets.
Our group's mission and vision align with the Shared Prosperity 2030 Vision, which is geared towards ensuring Malaysia's sustained economic prosperity and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens. Our study correlates with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 on Good Health and Well-Being, adopted in 2015.
Established in 2020, we have eight talented members with diverse backgrounds, such as biomedical scientists, geneticists, chemists, and biologists. They are working on various projects funded by USM, as well as national and international grants. We are based in the School of Industrial Technology at Universiti Sains Malaysia.
Dr. Ana Masara binti Ahmad Mokhtar obtained her bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences from Universiti Putra Malaysia and completed her PhD in biochemistry at the University of Cambridge in 2020. Her doctoral research focused on the oncogenic kinase ACK and its effects on RhoGDI regulation, investigating the stability, activity, and protein interactions of small RhoGTPases using various molecular biology techniques such as cloning, mutagenesis, western blotting, and co-immunoprecipitation, as well as kinase and ubiquitination assays.
Since joining USM, Dr. Ana has established a research group dedicated to small G proteins. Their work aims to uncover and utilize these proteins as biomarkers and therapeutic targets in cancer and immunological disorders, particularly primary immunodeficiency malignancy.
Her commitment to mentorship extends beyond academia. She actively engages in community projects focused on STEM education and raising awareness about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among secondary school and matriculation students. She has delivered public talks at various academic institutions. These efforts have been recognized internationally, earning awards with monetary value from the Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN).
