Living in an interesting city does not automatically mean having an interesting social life. Even in a place as lively as Zagreb, meeting people outside our established circles can take time.

For someone newly arrived in Croatia, the challenge may be finding a sense of familiarity. For a local returning after years abroad, it might be rebuilding a social network. It may be a simple desire to meet individuals with similar intellectual and cultural interests, practice languages, or encounter different perspectives for someone who has always lived here.

Small Friday International Zagreb (SFIZ.FUN) brings those different experiences together.

We are an informal, inclusive international community centred on a simple fortnightly tradition: meeting in person, enjoying conversation and giving new connections the opportunity to develop.

Our regular gatherings offer a place beyond home and work, somewhere to relax, engage with others and gradually become part of a familiar social circle.

You don't need a particular background, profession, nationality, or level of linguistic ability to belong. Curiosity, mutual respect and a willingness to engage with others matter far more.

Cultural exchange begins with conversation

Small Friday International Zagreb brings together Zagreb locals, Croatians returning from abroad, members of the diaspora, expatriates, travellers, Erasmus students and visitors from many countries.

People come with different experiences and expectations. Some want to strengthen their language skills. Others are interested in culture, history, science, travel, literature, art, or the experience of living in other countries. Many simply enjoy the unexpected directions a good conversation can take.

English and Croatian are widely spoken, alongside Ukrainian, Russian, Spanish, French, German, Italian and other languages.

There are no language tests or formal conversation exercises. Beginners and fluent speakers are equally welcome, and the aim is genuine communication rather than linguistic perfection.

Understanding Zagreb and Croatia

Cultural exchange at Small Friday International Zagreb is reciprocal.

For Zagreb's residents, our gatherings create opportunities to discover the experiences, traditions, and perspectives of people from elsewhere in the world. For international visitors and newcomers, they offer a personal introduction to Croatian society, everyday life in Zagreb and the historical influences that have shaped this part of Europe.

Zagreb's character is distinctly Central European, evident in its urban development, architecture, cultural institutions and historical connections with cities across the former Habsburg lands.

Croatia as a whole, however, cannot be understood through a single regional identity.

Its continental regions have strong Central European and Pannonian connections, while its Adriatic coast, particularly Dalmatia, reflects a Mediterranean way of life shaped by maritime traditions, coastal towns and centuries of cultural exchange.

Croatia also shares historical, linguistic and cultural connections with neighbouring Western Balkan countries. Those relationships form another important part of the region's complex heritage.

These different influences overlap and interact. They help explain the country's rich cultural diversity and its position between Central Europe, the Mediterranean and Southeastern Europe.

Croatia is a Central European country with a Mediterranean face an evocative expression of its geographical and cultural character, though necessarily only part of the wider picture.

At Small Friday International Zagreb, these subjects are not academic requirements. They are among the many conversations that arise when people from different backgrounds share their experiences and explore the world through one another's eyes.

More than a single evening

Our fortnightly gatherings are the foundation of the community.

They offer a dependable opportunity to meet new people, reconnect with familiar faces, exchange ideas and enjoy an evening outside everyday routines.

They are also a place to discover what Zagreb has to offer. Conversations frequently turn to cinema, concerts, theatre, exhibitions, restaurants, local events and opportunities to explore the city.

Participants can exchange recommendations and make their own plans for weekend walks, hiking, outdoor pursuits, excursions, or other shared activities.

These experiences are natural extensions of the connections made at our regular meetups, rather than a separate programme that participants are expected to follow.

We believe meaningful social relationships develop through repeated encounters, shared interests and the freedom to spend time together without obligation.

An atmosphere that encourages connection

Our gatherings usually attract around 50 participants, creating a lively international atmosphere while leaving space for individual conversations.

The community includes people of many nationalities, professions, and generations. Most participants are approximately 25 to 50 years old, but there are no age restrictions or preferred demographic groups.

Photographs capture individual moments and do not necessarily represent the full diversity of people who attend.

We encourage newcomers to move around, make eye contact, introduce themselves and join different conversations. It's often the simplest way to meet people who might otherwise remain strangers.

But there are no networking rounds, compulsory introductions or expectations to speak to everyone. Some participants enjoy meeting several people throughout the evening; others prefer a long conversation with one or two.

Both are equally welcome.

Our home at The Beertija

We meet at The Beertija, Pavla Hatza 16, Zagreb, every other Thursday from 20:00 to 22:00.

The Beertija is known for its extensive beer selection, rock music, distinctive interior and outdoor terrace decorated with sculptures of iconic rock musicians.

Its informal, welcoming character makes it a natural setting for conversation, whether people are catching up with friends or meeting for the first time.

Participation in Small Friday International Zagreb is completely free. There are no membership or admission fees.

We simply ask participants to support the venue by purchasing a drink. Non-alcoholic refreshments are every bit as welcome as alcoholic ones.

Come as you are

You can come alone, bring a friend, invite a colleague or arrive with family members.

There is no need to know anyone beforehand, and nothing to prepare. Our hosts and regular participants are happy to help newcomers find their way into conversations.

What happens next is up to you.

Perhaps you'll discover a new language, a different cultural perspective or an unexpected shared interest. Perhaps you'll meet someone who becomes a friend, a travelling companion or simply a familiar face you enjoy seeing every fortnight.

Connections cannot be guaranteed or arranged to order. But we can create the kind of welcoming, recurring social environment in which they are more likely to develop.

People may first come to Small Friday International Zagreb because they want to meet someone new.

The real measure of our community is when they return because there are people they genuinely aim to see again.
