My GS Gold Award project, Small Changes Can Save Our Seas, has been developing throughout my whole life. Growing up visiting the Jersey shore has given me 1st hand experience as to how beautiful our oceans truly are. Sadly, the beaches and oceans are increasingly littered with trash. Being SCUBA certified I am lucky enough to experience our oceans from another view, but I have seen first hand how much trash is being dumped into them. Volunteering with Clean Ocean Action and ReClam the Bay has given me a deeper understanding of our oceans, the challenges of Ocean Conservation, and the negative impact of single-use plastics. When I began my Girl Scout Gold Award there was no doubt that I wanted to choose a topic relating to our oceans. Single-Use plastics have been a major focus around the world, in the news, and even in our local communities. My passion for the ocean has motivated my desire to educate our community about the need to rethink single-use plastics. The creation of Ocean Conservation Clubs at Union Township School and North Hunterdon High School has given me the opportunity to educate the voices of tomorrow, on how even small changes can have a BIG Impact. Continued work with local Girl Scout Troops, restaurants, and schools has allowed our community an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the challenges our environment face. “Alone, we are a single drop of water. Together, we are an ocean.”
