BASF Wyandotte Health Assessment, 2024 to Present
On February 28th, 2024 a group of 5 Michigan environmental non-profits sent a letter of request to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) requesting a formal Public Health Assessment for the City of Wyandotte.
MDHHS toxicologist Dr. Joost van't Erve has been assigned to produce the Health Assessment. Quarterly public meetings are held by MDHHS to provide updates on the development of the Health Assessment. Dr. van't Erve has stated he expects to complete the Health Assessment by the end of 2026. This Health Assessment will evaluate community exposure to mercury, benzene, and PFAS from historical and ongoing discharges at the BASF Wyandotte facility.
Contact MDHHS staff member Staci Bator at bators@michigan.gov to request invitations to future Health Assessment update meetings.
The next update meeting is scheduled virtually on Wednesday September 30th, 2026 at 9:30am-11am.
