The Singing Saints have appeared on many albums since the group’s founding in 1950. Our crack team of researchers continues to discover recorded material all the time.
In this section of singingsaints.org, you’ll be able to listen to versions of Saints songs and browse through the albums the Saints have released over our 75-year history. Because this page is in constant development, we need your help! Some of the information about our recordings is limited or missing entirely, and we are trying to locate copies of the old albums for our Archives. If you have information about one of these albums or a copy of an older recording that you would be willing to donate, please contact us. If you have additions or changes to this list, please let us know.

This LP features several other SLU music groups including the Laurentian Singers, Sinners and University Band and was produced as a promotional tool for the University. It is unclear whether the exclamation point is part of the title as while it appears in the title on the LP labels, it does not appear in the title on the front of the LP jacket.

The liner notes reference this as being recorded live at the Tick Tock; a recently found contact sheet containing other photos from the same night confirms that. Also, there is a reference in a Saints marketing brochure of the same era to it being produced by RCA Victor, and while the matrix numbers are consistent with RCA Victor “custom” numbers, there is no indication on the package that RCA Victor was involved.
Personnel

Tenor 1: Dick Moloy, Dick Romano
Bass 2: John Butler, Al Martin, Bruce Williams
Tenor 2: Bob Clarke, Tom Funicello, Tom Hanewald, Jon Kingsepp
Other Comments
The liner notes say that this is the first time the Saints “hold center stage on a recording” despite the existence of the earlier Saints-only record, Saints. Also, there is a reference in a Saints marketing brochure of the same era to this being the “fourth” album. However, it can only be the fourth if the 1954 recording of the Saints WEEI-Boston radio broadcast "Transcribed" is included, even though it was never released commercially.

While these sessions were recorded digitally, only analog cassettes were manufactured. The artwork appears to be designed using a word processor and photocopier and then hand-folded and inserted into the cassette boxes. As a result, when we decided to include a discography in the liner notes for Over The Hill, we couldn't locate what we thought was an original--even though we had one--because we confused the hand-made artwork with a bad photocopy job. (We actually thought we had somebody's dubbed copy and not the real thing.) To compensate, the cover was redesigned and appears here. It wasn't until the 55th Reunion that we realized our mistake and learned that three different versions of the art exist. The originals are in the image archive, here, here and here.

Peter Saunders was the one who came up with the idea for this album and was instrumental in obtaining funding (through a proposal) from the President’s Discretionary Fund.
We originally wanted the album title to be “Absolut Saints” and envisioned a cover using the group's photo together with an illustration involving a bottle of Absolut vodka (inspired by the very popular ad campaign). The cover photo was taken behind Vilas Hall (the Beta Theta Pi house is behind us) against a white, snowy background. By having as little background as possible, the designer could easily mesh the illustration with the photo. (If you look closely you can see where the background was cut out.) However, after the photo session was completed we decided against such a flagrant trademark and copyright infringement and as a result, ended up not with a full-color concept cover but rather with a black and white image against a white background and a black and white booklet.
Both exterior shots in the booklet (the other in front of Sykes Hall) were part of the same shoot, in the middle of the day, making some of us late for our afternoon classes. (Except for Brian Keogh ’94 who wasn't in the shots.) The rest of the photos were taken during a rehearsal in Griffiths Hall Room 15, but I don’t know who the photographer was.
I remember that we decided to make the “Compact Disc” logo on the disc label gold—in part because our rep at Digital House seemed to indicate it had to be--only to find out later that a second color on the label cost more and it was too late to change it.
It wasn’t until about ten years later that we learned that subsequent Saints referred to this record as the “White Album."

Soon after becoming director in the spring of 1992, I found a bunch of old Saints photos and began to get an awareness of the group’s long history and tradition. I later found myself in the Colgate University bookstore, fascinated by the two-disc set the Colgate 13 released in connection with their 50th Anniversary. These two events got me thinking about the history of Saints and my research led me to believe that the group would celebrate it’s 40th Anniversary during the 1993-94 school year. (A mistake that was pointed out when the members of the class of 1954 showed up to the reunion to tell me I was wrong and that we were actually celebrating the 44th!)
We thought it best to celebrate by releasing a CD (originally planned as two CDs—one of standard Saints songs and one of the material we sang at the time) as part of the reunions's festivities during Homecoming Weekend. We knew that this meant performing a concert before Family Weekend--much earlier in the year than we typically were ready--and that would require recording the album a whole year in advance to allow time for production, design and manufacturing. To do so, we would also have to plan our membership for the Fall of 1993 well in advance, holding auditions every semester for two years to insure that the group would be at full strength and well-rehearsed in time.
Because we didn’t have any color in the Singing Saints package, I wanted to insure that at least the cover of Over the Hill was in color. The photo was taken on February 12, 1993 just before a concert in Gulick Auditorium with the UVM Cat’s Meow. (We scheduled the concert and the photo shoot to take full advantage of our rented tuxedos.) In order to get the picture we basically took over Vilas Hall and forced all work to come to a halt.

The first Vocal Accord (held in February 1994) was so successful that a second was scheduled the following year. It was decided that a recording of the concert would be useful, not to the current group, but all of those performing, including the Sinners, Instrumentally Challenged and Binghamton Crosbys.
--comments by Mark Tavern '94
Vocal Accord '95 was conceived in an effort to help the Sinners and Instrumentally Challenged obtain a live recording of their performances. The Sinners were trying to become more professional and tour but had trouble getting bookings because they had no albums or other recordings to provide to other groups. Instrumentally Challenged was only two years old in 1995, and they had no recordings, either. The Saints had become very good friends of Instrumentally Challenged, performing with them three times in two years, so it was decided the Saints would fund a live album from Vocal Accord '95 and offer copies to the Sinners and Instrumentally Challenged. (The Bucknell Bison Chips were offered a share as well, but they declined.)
We commissioned some original artwork from my friend, Andrew Hotis, to save on production costs as well.
Unfortunately, when we saw the proof of the album cover, something was very wrong. The production company had put "The Singing Saints" on the album cover and refused to redesign it unless we paid them another $500, more than half the cost of the whole project!!! We knew the Sinners and IC would be upset that the cover had the Saints' name on it and not theirs. We just couldn't afford to fix the proof. We hoped they would understand since the albums were completely funded by the Saints.
IC accepted our apology, and, since they hadn't paid anything for the tapes, they really couldn't argue too much. But they were understandably disappointed, and the Saints were embarrassed they hadn't been able to deliver the promised product.
The Sinners, on the other hand, were extremely upset! They never did except our apology. In the end, it was just one of those awkward, unfortunate things; we tried to do some friends a favor, and it backfired. We'd do it again, though. And this time, we'd be even MORE specific with the production company!

This was the first Saints album to deliberately feature the performances of groups that spanned more than four college years. Because of the difficulties involved with album production (preparing enough music, obtaining funds, scheduling, etc.), the group decided to purchase a DAT recorder to capture concerts and record each year in the WSLU/North Country Public Radio studio during Senior Week. By doing so they would be able to record enough material from which to cull a respectable album, and insure that every Saint gets the chance to appear on record, even if one wasn’t released while they were at SLU.

Other Information
The Saints: Live! album was a collaborative project by then-outgoing and -incoming Saints Musical Directors Jason Beerman '99 and Brad Catton '01. It was produced as a final project for Alice Hessert's "Sound and the Stage" class. Beerman and Brad went through the DAT tapes of Saints performances we had collected over the years and chose the best recordings to clean up and include in this album. This album includes some Saints songs that slipped through the cracks, never appearing on any other album, and some of these tracks are the only known recordings of particular songs, including Call and Answer, Wrap Your Arms Around Me, and The Moment I Saw Your Eyes. College Days and And So It Goes later appeared on the next Saints album, Yardwork! (1999).

Because turnout for the reunion was so good, we had too much music for the 45 minute program we'd been given time for. In order to allow all groups the opportunity to take part, we just started early and performed as the audience made their way into the Chapel. When the concert was about to begin we simply left the stage and returned while Jerry Peters '95 announced the concert was starting. We recorded both parts.
