Biography

Hello! My name is Stephen Lewis, and I am eager to start my 4th year with the New West Charter family, and 1st year as the Math Department Chair. This year, I will be teaching Algebra 2 College Prep and Algebra 2 Honors. Even though we will start this semester at a distance, I know we will all make it a great and productive school year.

I grew up around the corner from New West, and graduated from University High School in 2001. After a few years of playing collegiate baseball, I found my true passion for education while tutoring high school students in Chemistry. When I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies in 2008, I moved to Long Beach to complete a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics at Long Beach State in 2012. This will be my fourth year as a New West Eagle, but my 9th year as a mathematics teacher. My first years in the profession, I taught middle school math in the Watts/Compton area, and was nominated for Teacher of the Year in 2017 as part of Green Dot Public Schools. I am eager and excited to mold the minds of young adults who are intrinsically motivated to not only achieve at the highest level, but to learn as much as possible, as well.

When I’m not lesson planning, or designing fun school activities, I enjoy doing almost anything outside. If you can’t find me at the gym, I’m either playing at the park, running on the beach, or traveling the world (Five Continents and counting!!). I spend my leisure time cooking, spending time with my wife and family, watching movies, or going to baseball games. (Go Dodgers!!)
