Spoken language assessment and feedback are crucial components of language learning, yet developing robust and inclusive automated tools for this purpose remains a challenge. The Speak & Improve Challenge 2025, a special session at SLaTE 2025, aims to address these challenges by leveraging the rich Speak & Improve dataset. This dataset includes diverse speaker profiles and comprehensive annotations, offering a unique opportunity to advance spoken language processing technologies.
The challenge comprises four tasks that tackle critical problems in spoken language technology:
Spoken Grammatical Error Correction Feedback (SGECF): Providing spoken grammatical error correction feedback.
Spoken Language Assessment (SLA): Evaluating holistic proficiency of learners’ spoken responses.
Spoken Grammatical Error Correction (SGEC): Detecting and correcting grammatical errors in learner speech.
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR): Improving ASR performance for L2 learners’ speech.
Participants can join either the Closed Track, restricted to the provided datasets and models, or the Open Track, which allows the use of additional publicly available resources. Baseline systems will be provided, and performance will be evaluated using robust metrics tailored to each task. This challenge provides an opportunity for researchers to explore innovative approaches in spoken language technology and collaborate on creating inclusive and effective tools for language assessment and learning. For more information, refer to the Speak & Improve challenge 2025 website.
