In the spirit of Hipparchus—the father of trigonometry and a native of ancient İznik—Women Science Teachers launches a STEAM hackathon that fuses 1,700 years of artistic heritage with cutting-edge technology. This international event invites students aged 8–18 to explore the celestial legacy of Hipparchus through the lens of İznik tiles and Italian ceramic traditions. As the ancient astronomer once mapped the stars to understand the cosmos, today’s youth will map stories, patterns, and algorithms to connect cultures. From cultural storytelling to digital design, participants will engage in workshops, seminars, and creative production, culminating in a cross-border exhibition that celebrates both scientific inquiry and artistic expression. Hipparchus, who once guided civilizations by charting the heavens, now symbolically guides this new generation—uniting Türkiye and Italy through constellations, ceramics, and STEAM innovation.
The Programme of the Hackathon
EXHIBITION of the Projects
Launched on September 20, the STEAM Hackathon organised by
" Women Science Teachers" brought together Turkish and Italian youth under the same sky, inspired by the stars of Hipparchus — the great mind of ancient astronomy. Between İznik and Salerno, we built bridges of science, art, and friendship that connected young people, schools, universities, institutions, and even cities.
Over nearly two months, our talented participants received training from distinguished researchers.
Prof.Dr. Stefano Di Tore( Salerno University), Koray Aki ( Bursa Uludag University), Eda Dereci ( İstanbul Museum of Modern Art) , Burcu Türkkan (Istanbul STEAM Coordinator)
Empowered by these experiences, they created remarkable projects that beautifully blended #Hipparchus , #trigonometry ,#i̇znik tiles and Italian Ceramics with modern technologies such as 3D, AR, VR, AI, and coding.
The results were not only technological but also reflections of cultural heritage, scientific curiosity, and youthful creativity.
The stars of İznik now shine brighter than ever!
Our Trainings
During the hackathon, we not only worked on projects, but also received intensive training in project management, art education, and STEM; we gained hands-on experience in coding, artificial intelligence, augmented reality/virtual reality, and scientific research. Our valued educators provided us with this knowledge:
During our hackathon, Istanbul STEAM Coordinator Burcu Türkkan and her team joined us to guide the students through the project development process. They shared valuable insights on how to shape ideas into concrete projects, what key points to focus on during the journey, and the steps needed to move forward effectively.
Their contribution not only provided practical advice but also inspired the participants to think critically, plan strategically, and collaborate more efficiently. This guidance will help students approach their future projects with stronger foundations and a clearer sense of direction.
As part of our STEAM Hackathon, we had the pleasure of hosting Eda Dereci today.
She shared fascinating insights into the unique characteristics, production techniques, and artistic patterns of İznik tiles and Italian ceramics.Throughout the session, we explored how art and science can come together to preserve cultural heritage and inspire innovative learning experiences.
We sincerely thank Eda Dereci for her valuable contribution and all participants for their active engagement and enthusiasm. 🌿
Under the light of the stars of Hipparchus of Nicaea — the father of trigonometry and creator of the first star catalog — we are bringing together İznik tiles and Italian ceramics.
As part of the STEAM Hackathon, young participants from Italy and Türkiye received training on project development and İznik Tiles & Italian Ceramics, and concluded the program with a final session focused on technology.
Stefano Di Tore from the University of Salerno and Koray Aki from Bursa Uludağ University delivered an inspiring workshop on VR, XR, AR, MR, and 3D programming. Thanks to this valuable experience, participants had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of innovative learning environments and augmented reality applications.
With this final training, we aimed to build a cultural bridge between Türkiye and Italy. Now, it’s our students’ turn to shine! We are eagerly looking forward to seeing their amazing projects in 15 days.
Through this hackathon, we have successfully connected students, teachers, schools, universities, museums, and even cities.
Even 1,700 years later, the light of Hipparchus of Nicaea continues to inspire and guide us.
We sincerely thank everyone who participated, supported, and stood by us throughout this journey. 🌟
