At Skipton Ducks Underwater Hockey Club, we believe that having the right gear is key to an exhilarating and safe experience beneath the surface. Discover everything you need to know about getting ready for the exciting world of underwater hockey. We have starter packs for sale, click here for details.
Mask & Snorkel
The mask should be dual lens for safety, even safer are plastic lenses however they do scratch easily if not looked after, a good starter mask is the curve.
Snorkels should be flexible and soft so they cant injure other players, the Canal II is a fantastic snorkel
A mouthguard is also an essential piece of equipment, these are fitted to the snorkel to prevent injury.
All these items are available from the BOA shop
Fins
Probably the most important item of kit, fins are essential for propulsion through the water, when starting out a set off snorkelling fins will suffice, look out for reputable brands such as Mares, Cressi, ebay is a great place to get some cheap.
As you get hooked on the sport and get more experienced you may want to upgrade to specific fins for underwater hockey, these can be expensive but look after them and they will last years brands such as Fins 4 u, Brier, Leaderfins, powerfins, Najade, murena are all good brands
Glove
Gloves are worn on the playing hand to protect the hand against scraping on bottom of the pool also from knocks and bangs from the puck and other players sticks.
They can be purchased from BOA shop but can also be made with a cotton / nylon glove and silicone sealant there's a great tutorial here
Sticks
Underwater hockey sticks have come a long way since people made them out of wood, now there's so much choice its a case of trying them out to see if you like them.
We have our own 3D printed 'ducks' sticks pictured above available to buy from the club.
