This year we had a student assist Not3s the music artist, a student placed at the Houses of Parliament and another students placement was based abroad in Italy at a doctors surgery.
See below for some of our amazing feedback and pictures of some of the students on work experience.
"Esther was extremely attentive in the needs of the recording artist Not3s, as she was able to create and capture content from Not3s’ daily endeavours while also being there for him when needed or not. From the smallest things, like bringing him a bottle of water before going anywhere he had to be, to making sure that his timing was on point for events, interviews & Studio sessions that he had to attend."
"Kyren displayed the ability to think critically and always asked very insightful questions to gain deeper understanding in very complex and technical fields he had no prior experience or exposure to. He was able to engage with stakeholders at all levels in a positive and professional manner and his calm enthusiasm left a positive impression with everyone he met across the organisation."
"Joe was a pleasure to have in the office. He completed the set tasks with enthusiasm and represented Lord Best and myself in an exemplary manner both in meetings and in the Chamber."
"Waleed took to the professional environment extremely well, some even mistaking him for a new start. He was friendly, inquisitive and keen to learn as much as he could from many different departments. Waleed took initiative and used the work experience to build his connections on LinkedIn and networked with the staff. He was not afraid to ask question and was not intimated by new environments."
"Ibraheem showed that he is able to get on with tasks and find solutions for problems when under pressure. He asks questions when he is not sure and takes initiative. He showed that he can direct and manage others."
"Dwann is keen and very able to complete tasks. He has a positive and enthusiastic approach that will serve him well. He follows instructions, asks questions to confirm, and performs to a high standard."

This year for Black History Month Skinners' Academy decided to celebrate BHM a week early due to the half term falling on the last week of October.
This year the BHM theme was TIME FOR CHANGE: ACTION NOT WORDS.
Throughout the month celebrating BHM we focused on BLACK EXCELLENCE!
On Wednesday 5th October, we welcomed the award-winning Jade LB author of ‘Keisha The Sket’. She is also featured in the new Stormzy video ‘Mel made me do it’.
We staged a Q&A with Jade with interviewer Nancy Adimora, one of the most influential publishers at Harper Collins, Nancy also has a literary magazine called ‘Afreada’ that features stories from the African Diaspora.
Our students were truly inspired by our guests’ stories; both were presented with a Skinners’ Academy Black Heroes Award.
On Friday 7th October we had Venessa Taylor, Author of Baller Boys, deliver an assembly to our Y7 & Y8 pupils about her newly found career as an Author and her journey to getting there, including her diagnosis of Leukemia.
Baller Boys is The Peoples Book Prize winner 2021 for Children’s literature and was shortlisted for the Diverse Book Awards 2021 children’s category.
The ethos behind the book is to encourage all children to fall in love with reading through books and stories that reflect them and their communities, that are representative of their lives, and that inspire all children to exercise their bodies with sport, and their brains with books. ‘Baller Boys is a great children’s read.’ It is not just about football; it is about children and their possibilities. Centered around the players in a grass roots football team, it follows the journey of two friends from trial day to selection, where only one of them makes the main team and the other does not and what happens when feelings of jealousy and belonging surface.
Baller Boys has been the No1 best-selling children’s book in the sports fiction category and has received many 5-star reviews about its authentic story lines, diverse characters and how it deals with many of the issues our children face such as ADHD, wearing glasses, living with asthma etc.
Baller boys was the October recommended read by Book Trust in the categories of ‘Best new book’ and ‘BAME book’ to read.
Baller Boys was included in this year’s Children In needs, children in read auction of books donated by celebrated authors and illustrators from around the world.
On Thursday 13th October our hopeful future lawyers welcomed a visit from Barister Laurie-Anne Power, and a former Skinners’ Girls pupil, Judge Adina Ezekiel as part of our #BHM2022 programme.
Laurie & Adina, both members of the King’s Council, shared their journey as black women within Law and offered their advice to our students.
On Friday 14th October a group of our Year 11 boys welcomed a visit from the MP for Tottenham, David Lammy as part of our #BHM2022 programme.
Mr Lammy, who is currently the Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, shared with pupils his journey into politics and the choices he made to get him where he is today. After sharing his story with us, Mr Lammy was presented with a Black Heroes award by one of our pupils as recognition for all his work in the local and neighbouring communities.
On Wednesday 19th October Bazil Meade MBE, founder and director of The London Community Gospel Choir (LCGC), visited our Year 12 students as part of our #BHM2022 programme.

Bazil shared his journey with our students and ended the session with a beautiful solo performance. We presented Bazil with a Black Hero Award to recognise all the positive work he has done for the black community within the British music industry.
On Wednesday 19th October our final guest as part of our #BHM2022 programme was Diane Abbott, MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987. Diane Abbott is the first black woman elected to Parliament, and the longest-serving black MP in the House of Commons.

Your current Job title:
S: Associate Director, Private Equity
V: Associate, Commercial
A mini bio of your journey into your current job:
S:After studying Law with French at The University of Birmingham, included a year studying French Law at Université Assas Paris II, I went on to complete my legal practice course below undertaking my training contract at DLA Piper LLP. After a year of working as an Associate in the Corporate team, I moved to Osborne Clarke where I began to specialise in Private Equity. I have been at Osborne Clarke or almost 7 years now and have progressed from Associate to Senior Associate and two years ago was promoted to Associate Director.
V: I studied history at the University of St Andrews and then spent a year teaching English in a small town in Germany. After deciding I wanted to be a lawyer, I applied for and was lucky enough to be offered a training contract at Osborne Clarke. They sponsored my legal conversion course and legal practice course at BPP University in London. After qualifying, I joined Osborne Clarke's Commercial team, where I advise tech companies on advertising, consumer and data protection law. I have also spent three months as a legal secondee at Discovery Inc, now Warner Brothers Discovery.
What advice would you give our students who want to study Law at University?
S:Think about why you are choosing to study law and whether you are doing it because you are genuinely interested in the subject. Law is a time intensive course and involves significant time spent reading and studying, even before the course has begun. Gone are the days that you have to study law to become a lawyer and often law firms prefer to take on trainees who haven’t studied law as they believe they have a more simplified understanding of law which helps with their communication of legal issues to clients. There is also a view that non-law students who have studied a subject which genuinely interests them are often more well-rounded candidates and can offer something slightly different. If you have another subject that you find more interesting, go with that.
V: Having not studied law at university, I can't advise on what it's like! I would recommend that students wanting to go to university choose a subject that they are interested in and enjoy. This may be law or something else entirely! I'd also recommend taking any opportunity available for legal work experience to find out if it's right for you!
Why would you recommend the Apprenticeship route into becoming a solicitor?
S: University is not for everyone and often the costs can be prohibitive. It is not necessary to go to university to become a lawyer. The Apprenticeship route allows you to gain vital on the job, practical training, whilst being paid but also gives you the opportunity to gain a university degree over a 5 year period. Law firms are going to be taking on more and more apprentices as it becomes a more recognised and respected route to becoming a qualified solicitor. If I was a school leave this year, it is something that I wold genuinely consider as an alternative to going to university.
V:Apprenticeship routes into law are a great way of learning on the job and finding out if the career is right for you, whilst getting paid! I would definitely look into opportunities in legal apprenticeships if I was hoping to enter the legal profession now.

What is the best age to start contributing towards your pension?
As soon as you begin working. The earlier you start the longer you have to build up a large enough pot for a comfortable retirement.
How much would you advise to save towards your pension?
15% of your monthly income. Once you are 22, your employer will pay at least 8% for you, so you should add an extra 7%.
How much do employers contribute to pensions?
It depends on the employer, some are more generous than others. All employers have to contribute 8% as a minimum, but there are calls for this to increase.

A mini bio of your journey into your current job:
I worked for the NHS looking after university training for clinical professions, and gradually moved towards developing apprenticeships and encouraging a shift towards work based learning across many different NHS settings. Following a brief spell at the Financial Conduct Authority managing their internal apprenticeship programmes, I joined Hackney Council. This role is perfect as it allows me to bring my expertise of apprenticeship creation to employers and match this with the amazing but unfulfilled talent of many of our local residents.
What advice would you give your younger self if you had the option of studying an Apprenticeship?
Take every learning opportunity that you can. The chance to do an apprenticeship will be the best way to afford the qualifications you need, it is the best way to gain directly relevant experience as you learn, with the support of people around you to help and guide you.

A mini bio of your journey into your current job:
I took a gap year to gain some more work experience before going to university, but when I graduated I still had no idea what I wanted to do! I started working as a Teaching Assistant in a secondary school, as a lot of my experience was working with young people. Then I changed direction and moved into HR (Human Resources) where I was working in recruitment, hiring people for summer jobs. I worked my way up to managing the summer recruitment project, but I really started to miss working with young people so I then applied for a job at Inspire and here I am today! At Inspire, I started working as a project manager and then began to work my way up again – now I oversee all our programmes as well as our fundraising at the charity.
What advice would you give your younger self just before you started your Year 10 Work Experience?
Keep an open mind and ask as many questions as you can, it’s your chance to do something different and learn a lot. If it’s not for you, that doesn’t matter! At least you will have narrowed down your options.

Following on from this, all students will have the opportunity to send their own CVs to a group of volunteers at Osborne Clarke, who will be able to critique and feedback on each.”

Name:

Your current Job title:
Senior Associate (Solicitor), Real Estate, Osborne Clarke
A mini bio of your journey into your current job:
I studied Law at university and then completed my post-graduate Legal Practice Course and training contract at Osborne Clarke in Bristol. I moved to Osborne Clarke's London office when I qualified into the Real Estate team in 2018. I now work with a range of Real Estate clients, with a particular focus on residential development
What advice would you give your younger self when completing your first CV?:
Don't undersell yourself! Be proud of your experience and skills and think about what qualities you have that will make you a great employee.
Try to capture the reader’s attention with a clear, punchy and informative personal statement at the beginning of your CV
Get the basics right! Make sure your CV is grammatically correct with no spelling errors, and in chronological order
Make sure your CV is laid out in a way which is clear, easy to read and makes the most of the space on the page. Headings and bullet points can be really helpful to breakdown information and make it easy for the reader to follow
Have a look at the CV templates on Microsoft Word (https://templates.office.com/en-gb/resumes-and-cover-letters). They are free to use and there are lots of different templates for different industries. These are a great starting point for building your own CV and they include prompts to help you draw out some of the key points that we discussed in the session
Get someone you trust to proof read your CV if possible (e.g. family, friends, teachers). It can also be helpful to print your CV off and go through it line by line or come back to it a few days later to double check spelling/grammar
Read the job description carefully and reflect this in your CV. The job description will set out exactly what the employer is looking for and you can use it as a checklist to tailor your CV
Ask family/friends if they can share their own CVs with you. It can be really useful to have as many examples of CVs as possible to help prepare your own
With each statement you write about yourself, think about an example of how you can show this and add it to your CV – back up everything you say with experience
Think about what job/placement you are applying for before you design your CV. Should it be formal or more creative in how it looks to an employer reading it?
Always think about whether you can update your CV each time you apply for a job or work experience

David also has significant experience both in the UK and internationally across all aspects of social infrastructure projects, as well as advising a range of public and private sector organisations, including sponsors, funders, sub-contractors and developers in relation to infrastructure and energy projects, major projects and greenfield and brownfield projects.
I have a keen interest in decarbonisation and helping businesses achieve their net zero goals. My area of focus is supporting the development of sustainable infrastructure.
I also support OC's involvement of Vision Path, a social enterprise which has worked with over 5,000 young people to improve their employability skills. I am also a Mental Health Champion at OC.
