Hello!

For a project I want to convert some objects to custom assets for Enscape but I was actually quite surprised it doesn't support importing .skp files.

Because I want to keep the polycount a bit reasonable I use Skimp or Transmutr to create a lower quality model which is than a .skp file. Or, I download a model from 3D Warehouse which I like to convert as a Enscape custom asset.

Maybe I've a bit troubled way of working but it's quite odd a Sketchup plugin doesn't support a Sketchup model for import while the output of the custom assets are models which can be placed in Sketchup. It doesn't really make sense if I need to convert my skp to obj and have to import it for the custom assets so I can use it in Sketchup again.

Maybe I'm overlooking a feature, if so, I'd love to hear more about it

Thanks Demian Gutberlet and I will make it a request, just wasn't sure if I might overlooked some functionality.

I indeed used the proxy functionality to link those but than I ran into the issue that V-Ray doesn't render those linked models yet. I'm also active at the Chaos group's forum and had just a replay on my thread there about the linked proxies (V-Ray not rendering Enscape custom assets - Chaos Forums).

I'm also aware the Enscape > V-Ray is a new thing but it's nice to play with while not working against a nasty deadline

No, not two separate actions, just one find your model should be good. I've edited the original post accordingly.

Put the models in a folder on your hard drive created for the purpose. I would use a special sub-folder inside the c:\softplan\ folder so you can get to it easily and always know where it is. My preference would be a folder called "Downloads", and then create a dedicated sub folder for every model - they don't need to be renamed that way. You can then unzip the download into the dedicated sub-folder, and the model and all the textures stay together in one place.

Not sure that I can tell you much more, as I don't remember any specifics about V14. My best advice would be to give it a try, and if it doesn't work, then adapt your method as necessary until it does. It may seem complicated, but once you get one to work, and you've got the hang of the various steps, it should feel a lot easier. Try one. If you get stuck and can't figure it out, then let us know what you were stuck on.

So I'm actually an architecture graduate last year, but drawing has also been my hobby. So almost everyday I use SketchUp and I thought that maybe I could use and apply my skills in 3d modeling interiors to csp. And then question crossed my mind that maybe I could sell skp models to the asset store or different art websites.

I have created a house model in Sketchup and I would like to import furniture as a separate objects/layers but with original coordinates. When importing the furniture models is there some easy way to keep the original coordinates? Maybe this is actually a Sketchup problem not D5 Render problem.

In this video (4min 20sec) the importing works perfect with Revit models (import model + click sync coordinates) but with Sketchup models when I select sync coordinates the imported model (furniture) in not loacated in the original position.

While SketchUp doesn't link models and you can't automate changes from one model to another (without a plugin anyway), there is a way to replace a component with a different one. SketchUp Texture club, as the name implies is a club for SketchUp textures. However, there is a 3D model section where you can access free SketchUp models. According to its about page, this site is centered on education, information, and 3D visualization.

To access free SketchUp models, you need to sign up for a free account. However, for premium 3D models, you can sign up for a premium account, which you need to pay a yearly fee. With the premium account, you can have a vast number of options to choose from.

Click on the 3D models tab at the top of the Sketchup Texture Club homepage. Here, you can find numerous categories, you can either select a category of your choice or search for the free SketchUp model of your interest.

Open3Dmodel, as the name suggests, is open to everyone. It is an open resource for free 3D models. This site welcomes you with a very simple interface. You can find numerous categories available on its homepage, you can either use the search bar, click on the .skp file type or click on any category of your choice.

GrabCAD has a very simple and easy-to-navigate user interface, making it easy for you to browse through its large library. To access free SketchUp models, click on the library option at the top left-hand corner of the GrabCAD homepage, search for the SketchUp model of your choice and click to download.

3D export welcomes you with a beautiful user interface. The color mixture on this homepage is pretty awesome. Although 3Dexport is a marketplace for 3D models, you can also get free SketchUp models from this site.

With a wide range of free 2D and 3D models, CADblocksfree is a good option for SketchUp enthusiasts. This site offers a large number of 3D models categories to pick from. Additionally, it is basic and easy to navigate.

To access free SketchUp models, click on the free 3D models at the top of the CADblocksfree homepage. Select the category you want, or you can go directly to .skp files by clicking on the .skp file format option, under the file format category.

With a plain, simple, and interactive interface, Sketchfab is the last site on this list. With a large community of creators and designers, Sketchfab boasts a large number of 3D models. Although it is renowned for selling 3D models, it also boasts of a large number of free 3D models.

To access free SketchUp models, you can hover over the explore tab, click on the downloadable option, this way, you can view all the downloadable models. Search for the model of your choice or select from a long list of categories.

With the above list of websites, it should be easy to locate and download free SketchUp models, either for construction, electrical, or electrical engineering fields. 3D Warehouse and CADdetails websites are perfect for architects and designers while CGTrader is a good choice for furniture models and GrabCAD is a good choice for mechanical engineering models.

This ible is quite different from my usual. 3D design tips are much more appropriate in video format, and so most of it is in the video. The goal of the video is to show you how to go about fixing a model that has lines and edges that don't connect properly. This being said, the goal of the text part of the ible is to explain a bit more in depth why these kinds of issues arise in sketchup.

So before I even start, if these issues exist, why use sketchup? Well sketchup is great for a few reasons. As far as a mix of simplicity and precision(ish), it can't be beat for the price (FREE!).
