Apparently, it could be debatable as to whether Kubb belongs directly under “Traditions” or "Just for Fun."  Why?  Because, for some families, it’s always been part of their personal Midsommar celebrations in Sweden.

Puzzles

If you're a jigsaw aficionado or just want to see more wonderful pictures of Midsommarfest past and present, check these out.  Each puzzle pictured below has a link to the Jigsaw Planet puzzle site.  When you click on a picture, it should open up the puzzle in a new tab.   If needed, additional instructions are in the dropdown sections below.

Quick puzzle tips

Puzzle picture: click on the landscape box on the far left of the menu bar below the playing area.

Enlarge playing area:  Click on the box with an arrow in the lower right corner at the bottom of the playing area.  Shift-click on the arrow box for full screen.

Change the number of pieces:  Click ‘Play As’ next to the puzzle title. Pick an option or choose ‘Custom’.  That also lets you change the shape.

Change the background color:  The vertical line of three dots on the lower left includes a Background command.  Hover over that arrow and a menu of different colors appears.

Pause the game: hit P on your keyboard.  Do the same to resume play. Hitting P also stops the clock in the lower menu bar.

Help: In the same three-dot menu.

More detailed instructions

You will see the pieces scattered inside a gray box, with a menu bar along the bottom edge of the box.

To see the full picture of the puzzle, in color: click on the little landscape box on the far left of the menu bar, below the playing area.  You can choose a size and move it around by clicking and dragging.  Click it again to dismiss it.  It can help to click 100% and drag it over the ghost image in the middle of the playing area.  That way you can toggle the image on and see what's missing.

Move the pieces by clicking on them and dragging them, then clicking again to release.  This technique may be slightly different on smaller devices like phones and tablets.  If your sound is on, you’ll hear a satisfying little click when a piece snaps into place.

To make the playing area bigger:  in the lower right corner of the menu bar on the bottom of the gray box is a box with an arrow.  Clicking on it enlarges the playing area.  You can shift-click on the arrow box for full screen if desired.

To change the background color:  The vertical line of three dots on the lower left includes a Background command.  Hover over the arrow there and a menu of different colors appears.  This is handy when some of your pieces are hard to see on the default gray.

There is also a Help command in the same three-dot menu.

You can change the number and shape of pieces.  Above the gray box, next to the title of the puzzle, is ‘Play As’.  You can pick one of the options offered there, or choose ‘Custom’ at the bottom of that list.  You can make it easier or harder and change the shape of the pieces.

Click ‘Rotate’ if you want the pieces to be randomly angled.  Default mode is that the pieces are properly oriented to drag into place without turning them.  If you want a more authentic box-puzzle experience, you can allow rotation.  You then turn the pieces either with the directional keys on a keyboard, or clicking on the piece till it lines up the way you want it.

To pause the game, hit P on your keyboard.  Do the same to resume play.  You can close the program and come back to it.  Hitting P stops the clock in the lower menu bar.

If you don’t want anything identifying you to appear in the Score rankings, change the number of pieces.  You’ll see a notice that your results won’t be in the rankings.

When you complete the puzzle, you are rewarded with a congratulatory chime.
