Identifying as Do-ers of Mathematics

Presenter:  Carmen Latterall, Professor, University of Minnesota - Duluth

When:  Wednesday, December 6, 2023 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Location:  Zoom

Abstract

Mathematics has long been viewed as only available for the chosen few; something done by “others;” usually male, nerdy, and white. Unless students identify as do-ers of mathematics, it is unlikely they will engage in the subject. This webinar delves into how students perceive mathematics and mathematicians by examining how students view mathematicians, students define mathematics, and what themes emerge from students’ mathematical autobiographies and their metaphors. We will also describe a semantic differential, to ascertain the meanings of math that people hold and show the different patterns of responses among various groups of people. Understanding these stereotypes and popular cultural portrayals, especially as it affects women in math, allows classroom teachers to directly influence their students to see themselves as do-ers of math.

Abstract

This webinar will look at the foundations of math learning, focusing on mathematical reasoning and fluency. We will examine how the elementary learner's mathematical reasoning progresses from counting strategies to proportional reasoning. We will answer the questions, "What is fluency?" and "How can I help my students develop their mathematical reasoning and improve their fluency?"  We will also learn several best practice routines to go along with each level of mathematical reasoning.
