FLY BALL TAG UP RESPONSIBILITY Plate Umpire:
FLY BALL TAG UP RESPONSIBILITY BASE UMPIRE:
These tag up responsibilities should be followed at all times unless there is communication between both umpires.
BASE UMPIRE MAKES CALL AT 3RD WHEN:
Since the lead runner into 3rd, if there is more than one on the bases, is the PU's responsibility, the PU will go to the holding zone between 3rd and home plate in foul territory, immediately pick up the lead runner, and prepare to make the call on her, whether at 3rd or home. If there are two runners on base and the next batter hits the ball for an extra base hit which will score the lead runner without a play, the PU pays little attention other than noting that the runner touched 3rd base and the plate and then directs attention to the play that might be made. The BU watches all runners touch 2nd and first and takes whatever play made on the batter-runner. If the batter-runner advances to 3rd on the hit, it is the BU's call. If it's the 3rd out of the inning, the BU quickly and vociferously makes the call, so that the PU may announce whether a runner scoring on the same play has touched home before the 3rd out is made.
When making the call at 3rd base, the PU goes down to 3rd in foul territory, about one third of the way from 3rd, quickly move into the infield for a good position to make the call. If the first play is at 1st base and there is a throw to 3rd, this is the PU's call! If the ball is overthrown and the runner advances to home plate, the PU stays inside the diamond and retreats to home to make the call.
Lineup cards continue to be a challenge. Many times the problem is created because the PLATE UMPIRE fails to do their homework at the pregame conference.
You MUST: 1) verify you have complete first and last names on the card (no first initials)
2) verify you have uniform numbers for every player listed - with no duplicates
3) verify you have defensive positions for every starter - unless they are a DP or an AP - you’ve gotta have 9 defensive players in defensive positions 1-9 plus
4) if they’re using a DP/FLEX, they MUST have it in the proper format. As the plate umpire, while reviewing the lineup, verbally say “coach, I have Jones listed in the 4 spot as the DP - hitting for Smith who is playing third and listed last as the FLEX - correct?” and get a verbal confirmation from him/her
This way, your partner is hearing that the rule is applied correctly, also
There must be a DP listed to have a FLEX, and there can be no DP without a FLEX when the lineups are accepted as official
Also, do NOT allow a coach to walk away or yell substitutions across the field - make them stand NEXT to you as you record a substitution or re-entry. Repeat the change back to ensure correctness. Then tell the other coach (or the scorekeeper if he/she directs you to them instead) what was just reported.
We’ve got to take our time and get our paperwork right - we can NOT take short cuts on this!!
