Message from the Halifax 488 superintendent
Welcome to the St. John Ambulance Halifax Division, #488. Our division is the largest division in Nova Scotia and has a long history of service to the people of Halifax and surrounding area. We are a very active division, providing first aid coverage to hundreds of events each year, totaling nearly 10,000 volunteer hours per year. We are excited to have you join us in the name of community services!
This site will help members understand the expectations and requirements, the organizational structure, St John Ambulance in Canada, the Halifax Division, frequently asked questions, and is a stop for members to find important information and documents! You will also find link to our other resources including division Facebook page, council Instagram and Facebook pages and of course, our VMS Site. I encourage you to reach out to a member of our leadership team for support with anything arising.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Are Training Nights Mandatory?
Yes. To remain a member in good standing with the division, you are expected to attend at least two training nights per month and complete 60 duty hours per year. In addition, certain training nights or meetings will be designated as mandatory by the leadership team. These will be clearly communicated in advance.
Active Healthcare professionals and SJA Instructors will be permitted to attend 1 meeting per month, and any mandatory meetings the division holds.
Can I be part of the Halifax Division and a Campus Response Team?
Absolutely! You’re welcome to be active in both. Just remember that your minimum attendance requirement of two training nights per month must be divided between the two units. For example, you could attend one meeting with Halifax Division and one with your Campus Response Team to stay in good standing.
Do I need to bring my First Aid (FA) kit on Training Nights?
First aid kits are required at all training meetings unless otherwise directed. Your kit is a valuable resource during sessions and scenario practice, as it allows you to train realistically and ensures you always have the correct supplies. It’s also convenient for restocking, since items can be replaced on-site. If there are any exceptions, leadership will let you know in advance.
How to submit an expense claim?
To submit an expense claim, complete the Expense Claim Form available on this page and attach your receipts. Submit the form and receipts to the Superintendent or Deputy for processing.
You can request a copy from the Stores Officers during a training meeting as well.
What if I have signed up for a duty but cannot attend?
When you commit to a duty, you’re expected to be there. We know that life happens, and sometimes you may need to miss a shift or arrive late. If that happens, please let the Duty Officer know as soon as possible so they can find a replacement or update the event lead.
If you can’t reach the Duty Officer, contact another member of the leadership team right away. In situations with unexpected or serious circumstances, just communicate as soon as you’re able.
What happens if I need to take a Leave of Absence (LOA)?
Members may take a leave of absence at any time for personal reasons (e.g., busy schedule, travel, or extended time away). Please note:
Equipment/Uniforms: Please return any loaned items so they can be reissued.
Longer than 3 months: Written notice must be emailed to both the Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent.
