Radio not playing? Ask our team.
SiriusXM can feel confusing at first because there isn’t just one way to listen. Some people hear it through a car stereo, others through a phone app, and plenty switch between both. Once you know which route fits you, getting started is simple. This guide covers all of them in plain words.
SiriusXM is a subscription audio service with music channels, talk shows, sports coverage and news. You can listen on a compatible car radio, in an app on your phone or tablet, on a web browser, and on many smart speakers and connected devices.
Many people first meet it as a trial that comes with a new car or a compatible radio. Others sign up on their own. Either way, everything runs through an account, so that’s the first thing to sort out.
In your car. This needs a radio that supports SiriusXM. Newer cars often have it built in. Older cars may use an add-on receiver.
On your phone or tablet. Download the SiriusXM app from your usual app store and sign in with your account.
On a computer. Open SiriusXM’s own website in a browser and sign in.
On a smart speaker or TV. Many devices have a SiriusXM app or skill. You’ll usually sign in or link your account once.
You don’t need to choose just one. Many plans let you use the car and the app together, but check what yours includes in your account.
Turn the car on and set the radio to the SiriusXM source.
Look for the radio ID. Many radios show it when you tune to a particular channel, and it’s often shown on screen or on a sticker.
Write the ID down carefully. Letters like O and zero, or I and one, are easy to mix up.
Sign in to your SiriusXM account, or create one.
Add the radio ID to your account when asked.
Wait a short while. The radio usually starts playing once it receives the update from the signal.
Leaving the car parked outside with a clear view of the sky helps the radio pick up the signal faster.
Download the SiriusXM app.
Open it and sign in, or create an account.
Choose a channel and tap play.
Allow notifications or permissions only if you want them.
If you’ve already got a subscription through your car, signing in with the same account often works on the app too.
Plans vary by location and change over time, so look at the options on SiriusXM’s own website instead of relying on an old page. A few things worth comparing:
Whether the plan covers the car, the app, or both
Whether you’re starting on a trial and when it ends
What happens when the trial finishes
Whether you want music only, or talk and sports too
Read the terms before you enter payment details, and note the date any trial ends so there are no surprises.
Go down this list in order. The easy things come first.
Check the source. Make sure the radio is set to SiriusXM, not FM or AM.
Look at the sky view. A garage, tunnel or tall buildings can block the signal.
Confirm the radio ID on your account matches what the radio shows.
Check that your account is active and the plan hasn’t ended.
Try a refresh. Many accounts have an option to refresh the radio from the account page.
Turn the car off and on again. Wait a minute, then restart.
For the app, update it and check your internet connection.
Sign out and sign back in on the app or website.
Try a different device to see if the problem is with the account or the device.
Check for a message in your account, since it may be asking for something.
Mixing up the radio ID with a different number on the stereo
Using a different email than the one on the original trial
Trying to listen indoors with an add-on receiver and no antenna view
Forgetting that a trial can end and renew into a paid plan
Expecting the radio to play the moment the account is created
Handle your SiriusXM account, plan and payment only on SiriusXM’s own website or app. Be careful with pages that ask for payment just to “unlock” a radio you already have, and with calls or messages saying your service is about to stop. Nobody who is genuinely helping you needs your password. If something feels pushy, close it and go straight to the official app or site.
Do I need a special radio for SiriusXM?
For car listening, yes, you need a radio or receiver that supports it. For the app and website, any phone, tablet or computer works.
Is “XM radio” the same as SiriusXM?
Many people still say XM radio for the same service. The two brands came together under one service.
Where do I find my radio ID?
It’s usually shown on the radio’s screen when you tune to a certain channel, and sometimes on a label. Check your car or receiver’s manual for the exact spot.
Can I listen without a car?
Yes. The app, web browser and many smart devices all work.
Why is my radio showing no signal?
Most often the antenna can’t see the sky, or the radio isn’t on your account yet. Try an open outdoor spot first.
Does the trial renew by itself?
That depends on your offer, so check the terms and your account page for the end date.
Can I use it on more than one device?
Many plans allow it. Your account page shows exactly what yours includes.
SiriusXM is easy once you pick your route: car radio with a radio ID, phone app with a sign-in, or a browser. Set up the account first, add your radio or sign in on the app, and give it a few minutes. If something here doesn’t match what you see, send us a question and we’ll try to point you the right way.
