SIRA NA MADRE
Facing the Truth for a Better Future
To raise awareness about the deteriorating state of Sierra Madre, which affects ecologically, economically, and culturally. Issues resulting from human activities. And to urge authorities to take action in support of stronger Sierra Madre protection, policies, and laws.
We envision that society will take an action that will urge the authorities to prioritize the deteriorating state of Sierra Madre.
The Shield of Luzon
Sierra Madre, a mountain range that rises to 6,283 feet high and stretches over 540 kilometers, is the Philippines’ first line of defense against climate-induced disasters, specifically powerful typhoons. The range spans across 10 provinces, from Cagayan in the north to Quezon in the south, covering areas such as Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Bulacan, Rizal, and Laguna. Sierra Madre is home to around 40 percent of the Philippines' forest cover and supports a rich biodiversity, with 3,500 plant species—58 percent of which are endemic. It also acts as a crucial carbon sink, covering 1.4 million hectares.
It has become our mission to raise awareness of the declining state of Sierra Madre regarding illegal logging, deforestation, and mining activities. Acting as the first line of defense against natural disasters such as typhoons and providing a source of livelihood for indigenous communities, preserving the so-called “backbone” of Luzon should be a priority for us Filipinos.
By gathering evidence and highlighting the cultural and ecological importance of the Sierra Madre mountain range, this research seeks to inform the public about its critical role as a natural barrier and a rich biodiversity. This project plans to encourage local communities and government agencies to take action towards conservation efforts and to promote eco-friendliness
