After weeks of cultural exchange, dialogue, and shared journeys across seas, the Philippine delegation to the 49th Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP) has officially returned home. Known as Batch Bagani, the 17-member contingent returns to the Philippines carrying stories of friendship and collaboration with renewed sense of purpose as young leaders committed to serving communities across the nation.
SSEAYP, established in 1974, is a flagship youth exchange program that brings together young leaders from Japan and ASEAN member states. Through a unique ship-based experience, participating youths engage in dialogue, cultural exchange, and collaborative activities that aim to strengthen regional cooperation and mutual understanding.
For Batch Bagani, this year’s journey was especially meaningful and deeply emotional.

Nippon Maru sails her Farewell Voyage
The 49th SSEAYP program took place from January 15 to February 17, 2026, with ports of calls to Japan, Singapore, and Thailand where participants engaged in national presentations, homestays, discussion groups, institutional visits, and cultural exchange activities.
Yet beyond the program itself, this voyage carried historic significance.
Nippon Maru, the iconic ship, which served as the floating home of SSEAYP delegates for decades, marked its final voyage. For generations of young leaders across Southeast Asia and Japan, the vessel symbolized connection across cultures, shared learning, and lifelong friendship.
As the ship prepares to retire in May 2026, Batch Bagani and their fellow delegates experienced the privilege of being among the last SSEAYP participants to sail aboard this historic vessel. This is a moment that made the journey both celebratory and emotional.
For many delegates, sailing on the Nippon Maru meant more than simply traveling across seas. It represented a legacy of youth diplomacy and regional solidarity that has shaped thousands of leaders over the past five decades.

Philippine Leadership in Regional Youth Cooperation
Another historic milestone during this year’s program was the SSEAYP Declaration spearheaded by the Philippine National Leader, Metodio “Ado” Maraguinot Jr. The declaration represents the collective aspirations and commitments of the participating youth across ASEAN and Japan in six key areas:
Quality Education
Economic Growth and Sustainable Tourism
Global Environment and Climate Change
Disaster Risk Reduction and Recovery
Social Welfare and Inclusion
Digital Society and Artificial Intelligence
The document also expresses gratitude to the Government and People of Japan for sustaining SSEAYP and supporting youth cooperation in the region for more than five decades. Significantly, this declaration is considered the first of its kind in the history of SSEAYP, which affirms the participating countries’ commitment to sustaining and strengthening the program for future generations of youth leaders.
The declaration is expected to be presented during the ASEAN Youth Senior Officials Meeting (SOMY) in June 2026 in the Philippines, which further highlights the country’s leadership in advancing regional youth collaboration.

Beyond the Voyage
Batch Bagani represents young leaders from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao who champion advocacies in governance, education, peacebuilding, health, environmental protection, social inclusion, agriculture, and global mobility.
The journey did not begin nor end with the ship.
The SSEAYP experience includes post-program activities where delegates continue implementing youth initiatives and strengthening partnerships across communities in the Philippines.
Guided by its core values of Pagkakaisa (Unity), Kagitingan (Courage), Pamana (Legacy), Bagani now carries forward the mission of empowering Filipino youth and fostering stronger ties across the ASEAN and Japan region.

The Journey Continues
As Batch Bagani returns home, they do so not just as delegates who completed an international program, but as ambassadors of cooperation, friendship, and youth leadership.
Their voyage may have ended, and the historic Nippon Maru may soon retire from the seas, but the spirit of SSEAYP lives on in the young leaders who continue its legacy.
Being Bagani means committing to protect communities, lead with courage, and carry the spirit of service for generations to come.
As this batch always say,
In unity, courage, and legacy - we are Bagani!
