Singing Resistance Central Coast (SRCC) is based in Los Osos, SLO County, CA.
We are Singing Resistance Central Coast— a local chapter of a growing national movement. This movement was inspired by the original Singing Resistance group [IG @singingresistance] , organized in January of this year as a nonviolent response to the I.C.E. and DHS actions in the Twin Cities of Minnesota.
We are building a large movement of singers that is radically welcoming. We hold a vision of Singing Resistance growing as small “pods” all across San Luis Obispo County— voices rising together in community, courage, and care.
Singing Resistance is a loving entry point for many people, including those who are new to social movements and activism. We sing simple songs, taught by ear— songs that speak to these times. We sing because song is an antidote to fear because it connects us, and because it helps us name and protect what we hold sacred.
We sing in public— for solace, for strength, for solidarity— to voice our dissent and refuse cooperation with oppressive systems. We sing for a future where all people— Black, Brown, Indigenous, Immigrant, Trans, Queer, Disabled, underprivileged communities — and the Earth itself—are safe and sovereign. And we sing to bear witness.
People have been taken from their families across San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. History shows us that one powerful way to resist authoritarianism is to appeal to the humanity of those carrying it out— to invite them to choose conscience over compliance.
We sing, we march, and we connect people to action— to rapid response networks, mutual aid, advocacy, and community care. We are a loving, nonviolent movement—rooted in courage, compassion, and collective care. We don’t just sing for the world we want— we sing to create it, right here and now. We sing to heal— from the weight of living in an oppressive system, to reconnect with our feelings, our voices, and each other. Because when we sing together, we move energy, we support our nervous systems, and we remember our grief, our courage, and our power.
Singing Resistance is about protecting and caring for our communities in the face of rising authoritarianism, facism, the violent tactics of ICE agents and kidnappings, horrific detention centers, war, and so on. Our Sonic Activism gatherings will take place throughout San Luis Obispo County at protect-our-democracy rallies, protests, marches, and community gatherings – gatherings to rise up in solidarity for social change and justice, promoting democracy, diversity, inclusiveness, support, kindness, and compassion for one another and our planet. We are grounded in love, nonviolence, and solidarity.
If Singing Resistance Central Coast resonates with you we invite you to connect with us. You can even start a singing pod in your own community— we’ll help guide you. Let’s raise our voices— not in hate, but in love - not in fear, but in courage - and not alone, but together.
The Toolkit from Singing Resistance has LOTS more info on what we represent.
We plan to sing songs we are learning from Singing Resistance, Peace Poets, and other amazing, peace-loving song artists. Classics, too!
We will be continually adding more and more songs to sing at our Singing Resistance Central Coast events and gatherings.
Sing with us at Singing Meetups and Action Day events around SLO County.
This site is inspired by the original Songbook from Singing Resistance Twin Cities. Deep gratitude to all of the artists who continue to feed and fuel social movements throughout history and now.
