Parrot Astrologer

This is truly a vanishing trade! The last time we visited Serangoon Road (2009) we could hardly find anymore parrot astrologers or parrot fortune tellers as they are affectionately called.

Traditionally what happens is someone (or in this picture, a couple) who wants to have their fortunes told will sit down with the astrologer. They will then pay him a token sun (usually 1-2 dollars). They will not tell the astrologer any information or details on what they want out of the session.

The astrologer would then let the parrot out of its cage. The parrot would on its own, without any guidance pick one of the pink cards laid out on the table. From what we have seen, there are about 20-30 cards for the parrot to pick from.

Once the parrot picks the card, it hands the card to the astrologer who then returns the parrot to its cage. The astrologer then opens the envelope the card is in and shares what is written on it with the person or couple.
