I think it might be because of the possible button differences (triangle,square,circle,x, rather than a,b,x,y). I know this isn't what your looking for, and I really am sorry... Given that iOS 13 now supports Bluetooth controllers (or at least, certain ones, namely the PS4 controller and newer Xbox One controllers), would the XInput library be useful in making a controller emulator that works over Bluetooth instead of USB? Wanted to clarify that I have used this method based on a mini router and virtualhere, to make wireless your xinput gamepad based on the Arduino leonardo. The previous locomotion system I have used, was based on just one i2c channel on an arduino mega mounting a digipot shield. The digipot shield on the arduino mega was replacing the joystick of the arduino leonardo. The arduino leonardo was connected via usb to the minirouter and the minirouter was wireless connected to my pc internet home network

I am asking you the question, because i am wondering if i could somehow control the joystick of a pc gamepad with my arduino/teeensy based locomotion system , also without crearing a custom xinput controller.

Then go to control panel, devices manager and go to "HID" Or "human ... sth" find the entry for your gamepad (could be 'USB gaming device' ... ) and right click properties, you go to Details, select Hardware ID, and get your "VID" and "POD" codes. Those codes need to be entered inside Xboxce.ini (Under "PAD1" youll find those variables). Save the file. DONE.

Having the gamepad emulate the Xbox 360 controller lets you have both sensitivity and it turns a diagonal into a single input. Sensitivity is far more important, but having diagonal as a single input is useful at times to, but less so.

Your gamepad emulating the Xbox 360 controller also increases it's compatibility rate. I mean, yeah, everything on PC is compatible with keyboard, but at the same time, that brings up the prior problems I mention: A complete lack of sensitivity, and you need to press 2 inputs to produce a diagonal input.

Any tips on mapping the D-Pad? I am using an SNES USB gamepad and by default it wants to map the SNES D-Pad to the Xbox Left Stick, but the game I want to play (8-Bit Boy) uses the D-Pad for movement. Both of them have the 4 main buttons reversed. All the axis and other buttons work fine, but the Triangle skill is activated when I press Square, the Cross is used when I press Circle. I know of more people with the same problem with A-B and X-Y keys instead of PS3 symbols type gamepads.

As for Wine, Wine only supports DirectInput and lacks Xinput support and many modern games require Xinput. To get around that you have to use a Xinput emulation .dll (same trick you have to use on Windows with older gamepads), haven't tried it myself, but it's described here:
