The Sustainability Initiative in the Marginal Seas of South and East Asia (SIMSEA) was founded in 2015, following a series of key workshops and meetings across the region. These early gatherings brought together scientists, policymakers, and institutions to lay the groundwork for a collaborative initiative aimed at advancing sustainable marine management in the marginal seas.

Future Earth Workshop – Kyoto, Japan
The concept of SIMSEA was introduced at the Future Earth Workshop in Kyoto. This gathering provided a platform for discussions on sustainability challenges in South and East Asia’s marginal seas, setting the stage for future collaborations.
February 2015
Meeting at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) – Malaysia
A follow-up meeting held at UMT focused on facilitating the establishment of SIMSEA in Malaysia, marking one of the first regional steps toward formalizing the initiative.
March 2015
SIMSEA Workshop – AORI, Okinawa, Japan
Hosted by the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute (AORI) in Okinawa, this workshop brought together regional experts to refine SIMSEA’s objectives and discuss potential research areas.
National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Roundtable Discussion – Manila, Philippines
In the Philippines, a roundtable discussion was organized by NAST to address sustainability in the Philippine marginal seas, engaging national stakeholders and aligning local priorities with SIMSEA’s goals. Read more

18th Pacific-Asian Marginal Seas Meeting – Naha, Okinawa, Japan
SIMSEA representatives participated in this international meeting to expand the initiative's network and gather insights from Pacific and Asian marginal seas research.
May 2015
Commencement of SIMSEA Program Office – University of the Philippines, The Marine Science Institute
SIMSEA formally launched its program office at the Marine Science Institute, University of the Philippines, marking the official establishment of the initiative’s headquarters and centralizing coordination efforts.
These foundational events established the framework for SIMSEA, setting its path as a collaborative force for sustainable management in the marginal seas. Building on this foundation, SIMSEA continues to advance regional partnerships and scientific research to address marine sustainability challenges.
