How to avoid being blacklisted in Japan
Paid monthly on time.
No outstanding bills when canceling the plan.
Settle any required penalties, if applicable.
How does being blacklisted affect you?
The procedures for negatively affecting someone's credit in Japan are not very different from those in other countries. In Japan, there are three main credit institutions. When bills accumulate without payment, negative information is recorded in these institutions. This process is called "accidental information" (Jiko Jouhou / 事故情報), which is inserted between the trusted information (Shinyou Jouhou / 信用情報) of the user.
In most cases, you can consult a lawyer, negotiate the debt, and pay it off over a few months or years. However, even after fully settling the amount, the negative information remains on record for at least five years. This means that if you repay the debt in three years, your record will still reflect the negative information for another two years.
Only in the case of financial loans is there a possibility of clearing the record earlier. If you meet certain conditions, the negative information can be removed from your record one year after the payment is completed. However, if the debt is from a credit card, your name will remain negatively affected for at least five years, or even longer depending on the case.
