A selection of student work produced in Digital Cinematography during Spring 2026. The course explored cinematography through hands-on exercises in camera operation, lighting, composition, movement, visual storytelling, documentary practice, and collaborative production. Projects moved between observational filmmaking, stylized narrative work, research, and constructed visual environments.
Kaiju Pop!
2026 | Collaborative Student Production / Digital Cinematography
KaijuPop! combines the visual language of the Western with science fiction, commercial imagery, and playful visual effects. Produced collaboratively by the class, the project gave students an opportunity to work across cinematography, performance, production design, sound, and post-production while building a deliberately heightened and artificial screen world.
THE VELVET KEY
2026 | Collaborative Narrative Exercise / Digital Cinematography
For The Velvet Key, students were divided into groups, with each group responsible for producing a different scene within the same larger narrative. Each scene was approached through a distinct genre and visual style, resulting in a film that shifts in tone, cinematography, lighting, and pacing from one section to the next.
The assignment asked students to think about how genre conventions influence visual storytelling while still maintaining enough continuity for the individual scenes to function as parts of a single collaborative film.

2026 | Documentary Portrait / Student Film
The Documentary Portrait assignment asked students to use cinematography as a form of observation. Working with real subjects and environments, students considered framing, available and shaped light, camera distance, movement, interview imagery, and visual detail as ways of communicating character and experience.
Produced for the Documentary Portrait assignment, Sam Aceto explores how cinematography can establish character through environment, composition, light, and selected observational details. The exercise challenged students to approach documentary subjects visually as well as informationally.

A student documentary portrait developed as part of the Spring 2026 Digital Cinematography course. The project uses image, environment, and observational filmmaking to construct a visual portrait of its subject rather than relying solely on conventional exposition.

The Journey: Elliot Rosa was created as part of the course’s documentary cinematography work, with an emphasis on visual storytelling, subject-driven imagery, and the relationship between a person and the environments through which their story is presented.
ISAAC'S AWESOME (BUT ADMITTEDLY VERY LATE) CINEMATOGRAPHY MIDTERM PRESENTATION
2026 | Cinematography Research / Student Presentation
As part of the course’s individual cinematography research, students selected a cinematographer and examined how specific choices in lighting, composition, lensing, camera movement, and visual style function within a scene. Isaac Aceto transformed the assignment into a particularly playful recorded presentation, combining formal visual analysis with his own approach to editing and presentation.
PORTRAIT OF A PLACE | SHOWCASE
2026 | Digital Cinematography Student Showcase
Portrait of a Place challenged students to treat environment as subject. Rather than using a location simply as a backdrop, students explored how light, framing, movement, texture, sound, and visual detail can communicate the identity and atmosphere of a place.
This showcase brings together selected responses to the assignment from the Spring 2026 Digital Cinematography course.

Portrait of a Person explored cinematography as a means of constructing character. Students used lighting, composition, environment, camera distance, movement, and visual detail to create short portraits in which the image itself communicates something about the person being photographed.
This showcase collects selected student work from the Spring 2026 course.
